A snugglesafe is a really handy thing to have around and I purchased mine not to use for my dog but for my guinea pigs. So what is it? Basically the device is a large plastic disk filled with some technical substance or other that you simply pop into the microwave and heat on full power for an allotted amount of time (this will vary depending on the wattage of your particular appliance), after leaving to stand for one minute the pad will stay warm for approximately 10 hours; providing instant and long lasting warmth.
The pad is made from an extremely thick material that means it is scratch and bite resistant so no matter how much your pet likes to gnaw they will never get to the liquid inside. Unlike other methods of providing heat this product doesn't rely on hot water, wires or batteries and is so much safer as your pet won't scald themselves or injest anything harmful; the fact that it is so quick to heat and lasts for a prolonged period of time means that you can rest assure your pet will remain toasty warm throughout the night - especially important if your pet is ill or old. The pad also comes with a cozy cover that is made out of a soft almost fleecy material and is fastened with velcro; this makes it easy to whip on and off should it need to be washed and also means your pet isn't lying directly on to the pad and its heat. A nifty point to mention is that there's no need to fret if you lose the instructions, on the back of the pad itself are the timing instructions displayed directly on to the plastic.
Out of the 5 of my pigs 2 of them are hairy monsters and look like walking mops, whenever I bath them I do worry about them catching a cold as their hair being so long and thick does take quite a while to dry off (I don't dare try using a hair dryer, think the noise would frighten the poor mites to death); I've found that this pad works wonders, I just put it in their favourite hidey hole and it makes sure they stay warm as they snuggle and dry. I've popped it in and checked on it hours later and whilst not as warm as when it was first heated it does stay toasty for a long period of time. My piggies are chewers but have left both the case and the pad alone; though even with an accomplished chew demon I'm pretty sure the snugglesafe would remain intact. I purchased mine for just under £13 from VetUk, though I've seen them selling for over £22 elsewhere! Great product that would also be great for cats, rabbits and small dogs, I love knowing I have it to hand just in case.
Although I like to pamper my dogs, I would not normally buy a product like this unless it was needed for a medical reason as my dogs are kept indoors so I don't feel they require any extra heat. However, one of my friends decided they wanted to spoil my two collies this Christmas and bought them a Snugglesafe Heat Pad each.
The heat pad can be bought from the snugglesafe website www.snugglesafe.co.uk for £19.99. Some pet's stores in my local area also stock these for the same price.
The snugglesafe heat pad comes in a purple box with various pictures of animals on it such as cats, rabbits etc. Unfortunately I am unable to say much more on the packaging as I threw it away as the snugglesafe's are now kept in my dog's basket. On the back of the box are instructions for use. A great thing about this product, apart from the obvious are that they instructions for heating are also written on the heat pad itself so there is no requirement to keep the box.
How To Use
Snugglesafe's work in a very similar way to a hot water bottle although they are much better. You pop them in the microwave for the required time (more about this later) and they retain heat for 10 hours making your pet's bed very cosy. It is clearly stated that overheating the heat pad is dangerous so always make sure you stick to the required heating times. The heating times are as follows:
1000 watt - 4.30 minutes
750 watt - 6.00 minutes
500 watt - 8.00 minutes
About The Snugglesafe Heat pad
The heat pad itself is a 9 inch disc and looks similar to a Frisbee although it is about twice the thickness. My discs are pink and I'm pretty sure they are available in other colours too although I am not 100% sure on this. The heat pad is scratch and bite resistant which means the product will last longer. If other people's dog are like mine, who like to pull or their bedding around and make a nest, then you will appreciate the hardiness of this product.
What Can The Pad Be Used For?
Personally, I used this product for my pets as a treat, every now and then, so they can have a nice warm bed. One of my dogs has epilepsy and after he has had a seizure, I always provide him with the heat pad as the seizures are quite fierce and they leave him body tired and his muscles aching.
This product would be great for anyone who keeps their dogs kennelled outside as it will provide them with heat throughout the winter and the heat would last through the night.
This product is also great for kittens and puppies that have been taken away from their Mum for the first time as it will provide them with the same sort of heat that they got from snuggling up with their Mum and litter mates.
I also keep reptiles and on the odd occasion that I have had to take my reptiles to the vets, I have used my snugglesafe to provide them with heat for the journey. I always ensure I put 2-3 tea towels over the top of the snugglesafe though as the heat pad is very warm at first and obviously I do not want me reptiles to burn their tummy's on the pad.
The heat pad can also be used for rabbits which I think is a lovely idea as it keeps them warm during cold weather.
Finally, this product can be used for pets with arthritis as the heat can help to alleviate any pain.
This product is great for anyone wanting to pamper their pet, or for anyone who keeps their pet outdoors. The other added bonus is that is also helps with medical conditions such as arthritis. For £19.99, I think this product is reasonably well priced too.
i bought 2 heatpads for my wieners on Wednesday, because i thought they would be the safest . i followed all the instructions. i was very pleased with them . next night i put one in the microwave and took it out and it was leaking there a little blob on the plastic edge, one of the wieners must hav bitten the plastic ball and it is now leaking useless i paid £20.00 for each one as i thought the where safe but i never even had them a day as i tried them out at night time.they do not keep dogs safe. waste of money.
My boys (cats) have recently begun to feel the cold more, they both have stiff joints and seek heat whenever possible but at 15 years old it's what you would expect. With this in mind I've been trying to find ways to keep them as toasty as they need to be and I remembered reading a review here on Dooyoo by our resident pet guide Emma about these Snugglesafe Heat Pads. I'd looked on all the pet accessory sites and many of them had electric heated beds but I wouldn't be able to stop worrying about claws going into electrical wires if I used one of these so I decided to buy a couple of the heat pads.
I bought my heat pads for £14.99 each from www.petplanet.co.uk which is a pretty good price and you can also buy extra covers for £3.99 each. The covers on ours are fleecy with a paw print pattern on them but I've seen tartan ones too. It doesn't say anywhere that you can wash the covers but I think you could get away with washing them either by hand or on a low heat wash. The covers have velcro at the back, a strip along the centre and then another strip vertically in the middle of one of the halves so it's easy to take them out of the covers if you choose to microwave them this way.
On the back of the cover is a fabric sticker telling us to heat the pad in a microwave, to ensure there is no food or drink residue in there before you heat the pad, not to guess at the time needed, to leave the pad in the microwave for 1 minute after the time is finished and to check the pad is in good condition before touching it to take it out in case you have overheated it. I always heat ours with the cover on because then you don't need ovengloves to remove them but if you take the pad out of the cover to heat it remember it will be hot!
The heating times are helpfully on the pad itself on a sticker, we have a 850 watt microwave so we use 6 minutes as instructed but I have found that 5 minutes is perfectly adequate too. I won't go through all the different times and wattages but the sticker is there so you don't forget.
The pad itself is like a thick frisbee, it is very solid and hard and that's my one minor gripe with these. You need to use them under a very padded bed so the animal cannot feel the solid circular pad. If you are using them for arthritic animals like I am you should be providing very soft beds anyway but if you are using them for outdoor animals remember to pad their bed sufficiently. I press my hands into the bed lightly to see if I can feel the pad and if not we're good to go!
These can be used inside or outside, for cats and dogs and rabbits. For large dogs you might want a couple to radiate heat around their beds but small dogs and cats will only need one. The animal cannot curl up on the pad unless it's a rabbit but these pads do seem to heat the entire bed.
So onto my boys using them! My boys have beds all over the house and there are 7 beds they use in the living room alone so I heat these up then wait to see which bed they fancy. Once they've chosen a bed I slide the pad underneath the bed. My two have taken to these straight away, as long as there is enough padding to stop them feeling the pad they are blissfully happy with some heat radiating up through the bed into their little joints. They both snooze happily on these pads and one of my lads likes his slap bang in the centre of the bed and the other likes his at one end of the bed so he can alternate leaning his shoulders on it and warming his hind legs on it.
They use them for hours at night at the moment to ward off any draughts or cold times when the central heating is off. I also heat them up in the daytime sometimes when it's cold so they can snuggle up in their toasty beds. The amazing thing about these is how long they stay warm, if I put one in their beds last thing at night then check it again in the morning it's still warm! They advertise they stay warm for up to 12 hours and I can verify mine have easily made 10 hours and still been warm. I even asked my partner if he had reheated these the first day because I couldn't believe they were still warm.
They are also safe for animals to use, because they are solid there is no danger of claws ripping them or teeth destroying them and it's lovely to be able to leave these in my boys beds overnight and not have to give safety a second thought. I could never have trusted an electric bed being left on so my boys wouldn't have got the benefits of one of those anyway.
As for joint pain my two seem to be moving a bit better and stretching more comfortably after using their heat pads, it's not an arthritis cure but heat does help with the symptoms. I've also recommended these to my sister-in-law for her rabbit and she's ordered one too. Any animal that sleeps outside in the winter should definitely have one of these and any animal with joint trouble likewise.
The bad point is how hard these are but they are so good I'm not deducting any stars for that. Just remember to check the bed is padded enough and if not wrap the heat pad in a blanket or old jumper or something like that. The good points are they are safe, stay warm for hours, radiate through the bed and keep your furbabies toasty, they are easy to heat up, have a washable cover and don't cost the earth. Brilliant! During the snow recently my two went outside for a few minutes and literally rushed back in to their heat pads!
My boys love their heat pads and patiently wait for me to heat them up and slide them under their beds at night. If they get too warm they slither off for a few minutes but then it's back on again as soon as they've cooled down. The heat pads don't get scorching hot so they aren't going to hurt my boys but it does advise not to use them with animals that are in any way unable to feel the heat properly just in case. Animals recovering from anaesthetic would fall into this category so be careful if that's the case.
Overall I'm thrilled with these and so are my boys. We use them every day and night at the moment and I'll heat them up whenever I feel they want them. They love the added heat and spend hours dozing on their toasty beds. A big paws up from my boys and a thumbs up from me!
I have a fourteen year old cat that has become very idol and lazy, she no longer likes to go out and sleeps constantly. I few months ago I started to get a little bit worried about her so I visited the vet who explained that this was just old age and her joints were giving her a bit of trouble.
A few days later while watching the television I noticed an advert that was selling this snuggle safe heat pad for pets, It looked very simple to use and also had great benefits for the animals so the next day I went to my local pets at home and picked one up.
The snugglesafe heat pad is basically a heated pad similar to a hot water bottle, it is spectacularly designed for animals.
The pad does not contain any water at all and it heated up in your microwave for up to five minutes, to give out 10 - 12 hours of warmth for your pets during these ever creasing cold nights. I tend to heat this up just before we turn off the heating at night and it stays warm for the cat until the morning.
The pad itself is a bright red / pink circular disc that is a similar size to a Frisbee and is roughly an inch thick, it is both scratch and chew resistant so this will work equally as well for the dogs or the cat.
I feel this is not only ideal for old animals, but it would be good for young baby pets who are adjusting into your family or even ill pets as it will help comfort them.
Because of the advert I managed to get this snugglesafe from Pets at home, it only cost 19.99 which is very reasonable considering how it has really helped improve my cat's quality of life.
Within the snuggle safe box you get the actual rubber heat mat and a little zipped fleecy cover to cover the mat once it has been heated, this mat needs to be covered by either this cover or even placed underneath a towel before allowing your pet to lay on it, this will prevent your pet from getting burnt as these can be very hot at first.
Since buying this I have been looking for a larger size so I can buy one for my dogs, as this is a little bit too small for them to benefit from, but unfortunately you can only by this in the one size.
You can also buy this online for 21.99 plus postage from www.petplanet.co.uk
I have found this so simple to use, I just pop it in the microwave before I lock up the house in the evening and then pop it into the cat's bed.
The snugglesafe seems to have helped with her joints and she no longer hobbles around for the first few hours in the morning, so while this is helping her I will continue to use it as it has totally changed my cats life.
I feel this is a genius design and it is not only suitable for cat and dogs, but it would be ideal for any outdoor pets, such as rabbits or guinea pigs. If you have any outdoor animals or any pets you feel would benefit from a heated night's sleep them I would recommend this extremely well priced snugglesafe.
This is very safe for your pet so you need not worry about them chewing or popping it as it is near on impossible, I feel that this will be very hardwearing and it will last for years.
After trying this out on the first evening I was very surprised that it actually stayed warm for ten hours, so it kept on checking it and it only started to go cold after 12 hours of being heated, the cat did get out of bed when I got up so I am sure that would have increased its chances of cooling down, but her body was very warm and she had no problems getting down the stairs that morning.
I would recommend this for any aging pet or any pet who has to cope with very cold situations, I can promise you both you and your pet will not be disappointed.
When purchasing this item from Zooplus.co.uk don't be fooled as I was that you will get a heat pad. The item for sale is only the cover and although your confirmation e-mail will tell you its a heat pad you have ordered you will only recieve the cover which having paid for this to be delivered you will then be forced to pay for its return. Also a return address is not supplied on the invoice as although the appears to be a UK company it is based in Germany.
*What is the Snugglesafe Heat Pad?*
The Snugglesafe Heat Pad, is as the name suggests, a heat pad, but designed for animals. It is produced by the LenricC21 company which produces a range of heat providing products for both humans and animals.
*The product itself*
Many pets enjoy extra warmth when sleeping or on cold nights and it can be especially benefical to the health and comfort of very young, very old or ill pets, but using a water bottle or wheat bag can be quite dangerous- they can both be chewed creating a choking hazard for your pet, the essential oils used in wheat bags can be toxic to some animals and the water in hot water bottles can very easily scold your pet if they leak- and they both have the major downside of loosing their heat after a few hours. The Snugglesafe heat pad has been created taking all those points into consideration and provides a safe alternative way of providing heat for your pet. Its a bright pink circular pad around the size of a dinner plate and about an inch thick, to warm up you simply place in your microwave for six minutes (depending on the power of your microwave) and the pad will stay at the same consistant and animal friendly heat for 12 hours, which makes it perfect for over night use- say if you heat it up for your pet 9pm one evening, its still going to be just as warm at 9am the next morning. The product can be used for any animal and is especially useful for outdoor kept rabbits/guinea pigs during the winter months, kennelled dogs, puppies/kittens on their first night away from their littermates, old/sick pets and ones recovering from operations. The pad is bite and scratch resist, made from non toxic material and contains no wires, so is completely safe for your pet.
The Snugglesafe heat pad comes packaged in a yellow cardboard sleeve, with a section cut out to allow you to clearly see and feel the product before purchasing, printed on the packaging is a lot of information about how the product works, the animals it is suitable for, heating instructions and also a contact address for the manufactuer should you have any complaints or comments. The heating instructions are printed on the pad itself so there is no need to keep the packaging.
*Price & Availabilty*
This product is stocked in most of the larger pet shops, online pet stores (zooplus, pet planet ect) and vet clinics. I purchased my, well my animals, Snugglesafe heat pad from Pets At Home for £19.99, at the time there was a promotion on offering a free fleecy cover which fits the heat pad perfectly, although these can be purchased seperatley for £12.99 when not on offer. (Its important the heatpad is wrapped in a cover, or just a towel or blanket before giving to your animal).
This product has been a complete and utter god send for me and almost all my animals must have used it at one time or another. I originally brought it two years ago, when Benson was a puppy, I imagined during the first night in his new home he would miss the warmth of his littermates and this product seemed ideal as it took away the dangerous combination of chewy puppies and boiling hot water that would be involved with hot water bottles! It was very quick and easy to heat up in the microwave and as promised it stayed warmed for 12 hours, the only problem is the size of it, I understand it has to be small to fit in a microwave but its not big enough for an animal to sit on, but they can snuggle up to it so its no real problem, and would be fine for tiny puppies or kittens. I used it every night with Benson from 8 weeks to around 6 months old and it worked perfectly everytime, it was then put up and used occasionally for all sorts of animals from new born kittens that I hand reared, for lizards to sit on whilst I cleaned out their vivariums (its no subsitute for proper heating though), to Ferrets suffering with the sniffles (yes, really) and for my cat Jet to warm him up when he came home soaking wet from being out in the rain, and then for Grace whilst she was very young. But it was put into permentant use again 2 weeks ago with my Cavailer King Charles Spaniel, Ruby, now you may have read on my profile page that Ruby sadly passed away on tuesday, she had been battling cancer for some time and the past fortnight she had really started to go down hill and was feeling the cold. I knew the time was near for her so she was spoilt rotten (even more so than usual!) and slept up on, or should I say in, the bed with me at night times to keep her warm but during her day time naps she used this pad, it was more of a suitable size for her, and if she curled up small enough she could fit mostly on it and it kept her nice and warm for however long she decieded to sleep for, it also slightly helped her stiff joints and she didn't take so long to 'get going again' after she woke up from a sleep.
The Snugglesafe heat pad is very easily to keep clean, the pad itself can be wiped down with warm water and a mild disenfectant and the cover can be washed in the washing machine.
