I'm always treating my four dogs to new toys to keep them entertained and one of my recent purchases is this - a soft, squeaky sheep.
This came up on my Amazon recommendations and as soon as I saw it I knew that my dogs would love it. Seeing as my dogs already have quite a few Trixie toys and they are really durable I didn't mind the price which is slightly overpriced for such a basic toy but as it is good quality and my dogs love it it was worth every penny. I paid £9.00 for the large one and there is also an extra large one available which measures 48cm long - ours is 30cm and I find that this is just the right size for my dogs who are medium and large breeds.
I got the sheep as I knew that my dogs would like the fluffy texture but there is also a giraffe available which looks equally as cute. The toy is a basic soft toy but I like that it is able to stand up without being held upright due to the weighted legs and the first couple of times that I stood it up my dogs were all confused and started barking at it which was pretty funny! Although the legs are weighted my dogs are easily able to lug it around and I think that the little extra weight makes it feel more like an actual dead animal to my dogs which sounds pretty gross I know but they all love catching wild rabbits and carrying them home much to my disgust and I think that this probably reminds them of that!
It comes with quite loud multiple squeakers in the legs and body as well as two rattles in the hind legs. The squeakers are easy for my dogs to find and they make a fun, high pitched noise rather than a generic squeak and the rattles are a nice touch and provide a different kind of noise for my dogs as they already have heaps of squeaky toys. The toy is nice and soft with a short and fluffy coat and the design is pretty cute. It is white with black feet and a black face with white facial detailing (eyes, nose, mouth). I like that rather than having glass bead eyes like most dog toys do the eyes are stitched on which is much safer. It has little 3D ears which give my dogs something extra to chew on and the long legs are great for playing tug of war.
While this is a very well made, durable toy without supervision there is no doubt that it wouldn't last long as I have three large dogs and one medium dog. As it was quite expensive I only let them play with it when I am home so that I can take it off them when they get too rough and start trying to rip it open. It is pretty durable and has stayed in one piece despite how often my dogs play tug of war with it and all of my dogs love squeaking it and carrying it around. The toy is easy for them to carry as the head is a good size and ball shaped and the legs are long and easy for them to grip in their mouths. The material gets dirty easily and is awkward to clean so I try to keep my dogs inside whenever they're playing with it. They play with this on a daily basis and we've had it for around two weeks now.
Overall I give this toy four out of five stars and I recommend it.
As you may know from my other reviews, Eddie my gorgeous black cocker spaniel is something of a pampered pooch. Rarely does my husband come home from Pets at home without some sort of chew, bone, ring or toy for Eddie, much to the disgust of the cat who hardly gets any treats. Generally if he comes back with a cuddly dog toy it's because my little girl has picked it out and said that Eddie would love it. This is how Sammy the sheep ended up coming to our house (we named it Sammy!).
This toy is specifically sold as a dog toy and I have to say that Eddie did like him although unfortunately Sammy did not last very long. It's says on the packaging that this sheep is particularly robust and high quality. Whilst I would say that it is definitely well made it is definitely not that robust. I think it lasted about three days in our house before Eddie had managed to chew through a few of the legs and get the plastic squeaker out of them and basically just ripped the poor little sheep apart until I finally got fed up of the stuffing coming out and being strewn all over the house and I threw poor Sammy away.
Sammy is very cute looking. He is a black and white sheep. Most of his fur is white and it is made of that bobbled material so it looks like a proper sheeps fur and it quite soft and fun to hug. My little girl really liked it which is the reason why she picked it out for Eddie and liked to hug it and play in conjunction with Eddie with this toy. The mouth and nose area on the sheep is black as are the hooves on all of its legs. Its quite an unusual looking sheep though as it has really long legs. I can only think it is made this way so your dog can really gets its teeth around the legs and maybe carry it around like this.
The front legs of the sheep have squeakers in them, the type that when you squeeze the leg the leg will make a dog toy squeaky noise. It was these I think that were the first to go as Eddie was able to chew or basically rip through the fabric and get to the plastic squeaker and rip it out of the leg. The plastic bit is basically just a big sort of air bubble that moves in and out when you squeeze it which is what makes the noise and once that part had gone the legs were sort of useless after that.
The back legs of the sheep had rattles in them and so the whole thing made a noise when Eddie walked with it in his mouth or played with it. There was also a squeaker in the body section of the sheep too. So in conclusion this toy was fun while it lasted and it did not last long although I guess for £5 it wasn't too expensive but I was hoping it had lasted a little bit longer than it did. We will just have to stick with thick rubber toys from now on!!
