Nylabone Dura Chew Big Chew Beef Bone
by claireylulu Our dog Banjo is a Staffie cross and is a very powerful chewer when it comes to his toys. We have taught him he has his toys and my boys have theirs! We are always on the lookout for new things for Banjo that will last for more than a day and are safe for him. Whilst searching the web I found Nylabone and the large range they offer. The ... products seemed right up Banjo's street and so I decided to buy one and give it a go. Nylabone has many products to offer for all size dogs and for different types of chewers. They are classed as durable/powerful products for strong determined chewers or flexible/moderate products for less aggressive chewers. Of course we were looking for the durable/powerful products for our dog. I decided on getting him the large bone hoping it would last him a while I went with the Big Dura chew big chew beef bone. It had good reviews on Amazon so I went with it. The Nylabone is made of extra tough nylon allowing your dog to grind it down eventually. This particular product is a large version ideal for the larger dog although our Staffie cross is classed as a medium dog but it is perfect size for him he likes things bigger. The bone measures roughly 19cms in length and 7cms at the widest point. This bone is beef flavoured something I thought my dog would like. The Nylabone claims to fight boredom and discourage destructive chewing. Thankfully I seemed to have been lucky as Banjo only seems to destruct his own toys and not things around the house! As well as a fun toy that Banjo can chew till his heart's content it also claims to clean their teeth while chewing another plus in my eyes. We actually bought this product for Banjo at Christmas as I have two small boys I wanted to keep him occupied while we enjoyed time with the boys and their new toys. Even though there was plenty of commotion going on in the house at the time as soon as we gave Banjo the bone he took off to his bed with it and away he chewed for ages. At the time he still had his Kong (which he got through in 3 months!) but this took a back seat and the Nylabone replaced as favourite toy. For the first couple of days he was obsessed with it and carried it around with him all the time. He was very happy to just sit and chew away at it. He soon found it wasn't just going to break like many other toys. Some dogs may just give up on it then (I know my sister's Staffie cross would) but not ours he is very determined. Three months on and the Nylabone still lives very strongly! It is scratched and chewed up at the ends but is going very strong still. Banjo hasn't given up on it and still has a go with it every day. Usually on an evening when he comes into the living room he likes to bring it in and sit and give it a good go. On the packaging it does warn very tiny pieces may be found on the floor. We have wooden flooring and I have never seen any tiny pieces about. I really like the Nylabone and have been very pleased with my purchase. I like the fact it still looks relatively clean and nothing really sticks to it when it has been chewed. It doesn't really smell which for me is an added bonus! I am happy I don't have to worry about any big pieces coming lose and my dog choking on it. My previous dog (who died from old age) once choked on a pedigree treat bone and we ended up spending a fortune at the vets. The only warning I would give you is it is a little bit heavy and does hurt your toes if your dog decides to drop it on your foot! So watch your feet when they are about with it! I purchased the Nylabone from Amazon but you can get it from major leading pet stores like Pets at home, unfortunately my nearest one is over an hour away so I don't go very often. The large Nylabone Dura chew big chew beef bone will cost you £12.99 from Amazon. I think we got it a little cheaper just before Christmas when they had an offer on it but even for £12.99 I still think it is worth it. After three months it has hardly changed shape so I can see this one lasting quite a long time and it is certainly keeping Banjo amused. Nylabone Chicken Flavor Bone
by daisylee3 Despite having four dogs, I had never actually heard of nylabones up until a couple of months ago when my friend reccomended them to me. I was intrigued and ended up buying one from Amazon to try as I was curious to see if it actually did what it claimed and I also thought it'd be something my dogs would enjoy. So.. what's a nylabone?! A ... nylabone is basically a chew made out of durable nylon. They vary in shape and the one that I have is in the shape of a bone as you can likely guess from the title of my review. The product is designed for strong chewers and there is a range of different sizes to choose from, for example you can get puppy sized versions, medium sized versions or larger ones. Flavours also vary - there's a wide range of different ones to choose from including bacon and liver. I have the chicken flavoured one. Some nylabones are also edible, although the one that I own isn't. The manufacturers of the nylabone describe it as a theraputic chewing device and claim that the product promotes 'good canine dental hygiene'. Not a huge claim and I don't find it hard to believe at all, however, they do get just a bit carried away with their claims and state that the product: enhances overall mental fitness and encourages positive behavior.I find these two claims quite bizzare, and the only thing I can think that they may be referring to with the 'mental fitness claim' is that the product perhaps reduces a dogs boredom and keeps them entertained. They also state that this particular nylabone, the chicken bone one is designed to help clean teeth during chewing (due to the bristles raised when the dogs chews on the bone) and that it reduces plaque and tartar build-up. There are a range of sizes to choose from meaning that there's a size to suit everyone's dog(s). I have four beautiful dogs, 3 big & 1 small. I opted for the 'souper' size, which is the extra large. It measures 24.1cm in length and 6.7cm in width. Other sizes are: XS (petite), S (regular), M (wolf), L (giant) and XXL (monster). I would reccomend getting a bigger size even if you have a small dog as I hate the idea that a dog could choke on one of these bones - the smallest measures just 9cm in length. The manufacturers reccomend that you get you choose the largest size that your dog is able to comfortable hold in his/her mouth. Price wise, the prices vary on what size you get and obviously where you buy it from. I paid £17 for the XL one which is expensive but due to the fact it is durable and long lasting I think this is a reasonable price. Phsically, the nylabone just looks like a plastic bone. It has a solid, firm but slightly squidgy feel to it. It can be bent a little but not much. It is clear in colour and it has a smooth texture. There is a slight raised part where the text 'nylabone' is engraved onto it. The bone is easy for my dogs to pick up as it's not too thick, it does have a little weight to it but my dogs are still able to pick it up in their mouths with ease. Anyway, onto my experience and opinion - I bought the chicken nylabone a month or so before Christmas as I wanted something that would be long lasting as in my house we get through a box of dog treats within a couple of days. The nylabone comes attatched to a piece of cardboard with safety instructions etc. The nylabone at first was quite unusual looking, and my dogs didn't really know what to do with it. It has no scent (to me anyway, i'm sure it smells to my dogs!) and it's really strong and durable. It took my dogs ages to work out what to do with the product and they've only just recently taken an interest in it. Only two of my dogs have chewed this bone and it didn't keep them entertained for very long at all. The bone is durable though and has no teeth marks in it or signs of wear. I've also noticed that when my dogs play with it it has a slight bounce to it when it hits the ground which makes it a fun toy for them as well as an occasional chew. Clyro is the one who seems to like it most. He's a husky and very strong, he usually destroys bones and chews within 20 minutes however he enjoys laying with this between his paws and gnawing on it, he also moves it from one side of his mouth to the other which I think is a good sign as it must feel good on his teeth and he obviously enjoys it. Within half an hour or so though he loses all interest and the nylabone goes back in the dog toy box, and sometimes it stays there for a week or so at a time before one of the dogs picks it out again. The nylabone doesn't get too messy and when it does (eg when it's been in the garden) it is easy to wash and dry. I have not noticed the 'bristles' that are supposedly exposed when the dog chews but I assume they must be microscopic or something! I like that the chews have blunt edges and are firm but reasonably soft (eg if they hit you/a window/the plasma it wouldn't hurt/do as much damage as much as a real bone) and there are no sharp edges for my dogs to hurt their mouths on. Overall, this is a good product as it's so durable but it is expensive and my dogs aren't really too bothered about it. I would reccomend it if your dog is bone mad/loves chewing and you know they would like something like this as obviously a nylabone is much cheaper than buying lots of edible dog chews all the time. It is also obviously completely mess free. I give it 3/5 stars overall based on the fact that it rarely attracts any of my dog's attentions and it doesn't keep them busy for long even when it does. Nylabone Nutri Dent Edible Dental Chews Extra Fresh
by alexdave These chews are designed to allow the breath to be freshened as the dog chews the treat. The action of freshening the breath will only take hold of the chewing action is prolonged, or at least longer than the short matter of 3 minutes it takes my dogs to eat these. This means that they do not freshen the dogs breath in ... anyway! They are in the shape of a tooth brush and I suppose meant to action massaging the gums to remove plaque. Once agin they are gone so quickly that it does not make any difference. When handling the treat you can feel they are softer that other treats like the nyrobone and so it is obvious that they will not last long. It would be nice if they still freshen breath even if they are eaten quickly! Not sure how they would do this though! I dont see that they are worth while me buying them, however if you have a small dog or a soft chewer then these may be quite good as they will last longer and maybe even freshen breath! For the price these are retailed at I dont see the benefits of me buying them for my dogs. It would be unfair of my to comment on how they freshen breath as my dogs dont let them last long enough to tell. I can comment on how long they last and what the dogs think of them though. They last minutes and actually the dogs are not really that bothered about them!! Read the complete review |
