When we brought our dog Alfie from the Dog's Trust a while ago now, this is the food he came with. Not wanting to fiddle with his diet, we decided to stick with it, and we have had no problems since!
The food is in small, dry, bite sized pieces which are quite hard and crunchy. This is good for their teeth, as it scrapes away plaque and food debris. I'd imagine it's also quite good for dogs who rush, as the small bits need quite a lot of chewing and so might slow them down. It also makes measuring out the right amount easier!
Even though the pieces are quite hard, our Alf doesn't struggle, even though he's pretty much a gummer now so other dogs who have less teeth than a few years back should be fine with it too! If it is a little too hard, some warm water can be added to make it softer, without loosing any taste or nutrition which is a great alternative to just feeding it dry. It is also hypoallergenic, so dogs with sensitive digestive systems will find it doesn't upset them.
Alf seems to like the taste too. He's not a big eater anyway but he finishes a few bowls a day so it must be nice, and it smells pretty appetizing too, even to a human!
Arden grange is a great brand with a lot of choice, but this is a good basic food from their range in my opinion as it is for all breeds of adult dog. It has special minerals and vitamins to ensure that healthy coats, teeth and digestive systems etc are supported and has a fairly high meat content too. It also lists what amounts each size of dog should have which makes it easy to measure out the correct amount and not over or under feed your dog.
The bag we buy is 2.5kg, which lasts for around 3 weeks for our little dog and costs around £9, which is fairly steep, but it is a brand I'd trust myself and the bag details many reasons why you should choose it. The bag, whilst I'm on about it, is pretty good for storing the food in too, even once opened. It folds over neatly at the top, and a peg or clip holds it securely in place, keeping the food fresh.
I have a 3 year old lab x lurcher who isn't a fussy eater by any means. As a rescue dog she had issues around eating and will basically wolf anything down however this often resulted in us buying a cheaper brand mistakenly thinking she enjoyed it and therefore it was good for her. We had been feeding her Burgess Supadog Lurcher & Greyhound mix and swapped to their cheaper version Countryvalue with terrible effects. My dog was refusing to eat (a first for her!), loudly pumping and stinking the house out and the worse side effect, having wet sloppy dumps and often in the house (which really was out of order). It was time for an urgent change so I swapped to Arden Grange after hearing good things about them.
What is Arden Grange?
Arden Grange is a premium pet food for dogs and cats which can be found on the same aisle as the likes of Hills Science Plan, Royal Canin and James Wellbeloved. Premium dog food does come at a premium price. I buy x2 bags of 15kg food for £54.25 with free delivery (and often a 10% discount) from swellpets.co.uk (although I had major issues with this company). I find this price quite acceptable considering the quality. A bag will last different breeds of dogs different lengths of time.
The company states;
Arden Grange Adult Rich in Lamb & Rice is a highly digestible and extremely palatable diet, which has been specially formulated to meet the nutritional requirements of adult dogs with sensitive stomachs. It is also very acceptable to dogs with normal digestion and is an excellent adult maintenance diet. Arden Grange dog food contains no added salt or sugar, nor any artificial colourings, flavourings and preservatives. It is naturally preserved using mixed tocopherols and rosemary extract. It is also free from menadione (vitamin K3). Avoidance of the most common food allergens minimises the likelihood of adverse food reactions affecting the skin and/or digestion.

What my dog thinks ....
After refusing or reluctantly eating her poor quality food, as soon as my sacks of Arden Grange arrived she perked up and was sniffing around them excitedly. Before I had finished pouring her dunner out she was in munching away and licking her lips. It didn't take her long to finish the bowl. My only issue is that she may eat too fast which is why I do prefer brands which offer large chunks for large dogs like James Welbeloved.
Milly loves her new food and she is no longer stinking the house out. Her poo is back to being solid and healthy and we have had no accidents in the house. This food helps to keep her active and her coat is very shiney.
I am more than happy to pay the extra price for Arden Grange as I do believe you get better quality meat and ingredients that have been selectively chosen by the Nutritionalists who make Arden Grange. My dog is very happy to eat it and she is back to being a healthy happy dog.
Having recently reviewed one of the varieties of Arden Grange food that I give to my dog, I thought I'd review one of the others he regularly eats. Arden Grange Adult Lamb and Rice.
~What Arden Grange Say About Arden Grange Adult Lamb And Rice~
Arden Grange Adult Lamb and Rice provides wholesome, gentle nutrition for all breeds of adult dogs especially those that may suffer from a dietary intolerance. All Arden Grange products are hypoallergenic and free from wheat gluten, dairy products, beef and soya. They contain no artificial colorings, flavorings or preservatives. Feeding Arden Grange reduces the risk of dietary intolerances and allergies that can cause digestive disorders and skin complaints.
~Arden Grange Adult Dog Food Lamb And Rice~
As you may have already read in my other review, my little dog Red does have, in my opinion, a problem with his digestive system, making it difficult for him to go to the toilet at times. I swear by Arden Grange food for my dogs, although quite expensive, I feel it does my dogs the world of good. The Lamb and Rice variety does smell very strong and looks like small dark brown pellets, it reminds me of something you'd maybe give a guinea pig to eat. I mix this Lamb and rice kibble with the sensitive. (previously reviewed)
As Red is a fussy eater, I chop and change the flavors, sometimes he will have lamb and rice mixed with the sensitive other times he will have chicken and rice. I know he enjoys both the flavors mixed in with the sensitive, he just gets a little tired of the same one day after day, and I know he's just a dog, but I think I'd get fed up of the same flavor of food day after day as well. The lamb and rice flavor kibble is small enough for Red to be able to cope with easily and I often witness him munching away on it and getting through it fairly quickly. It's a much darker color brown than his other food, I can definitely tell the difference in the flavors by just looking in his bowl. I can always tell which he's into each day.
~Does Arden Grange dog food really do Red any good?~
Most definitely yes, In all the time I've been feeding Arden Grange to Red, he has never had any problems with his skin or teeth. In fact his teeth are immaculate, the vet always tells me how good and healthy his teeth are. He's as active and healthy as I'd expect him to be, he always looks well, his coat is in fantastic condition. Poop picking is no hassle, I know this is rather a disgusting thing to go on about, but every dog owner will know it's something we have to do for our dogs because they can't do it for themselves. When I say picking up poop is no hassle what I mean is, it's just cleaner, hardly any smell, compact and easy to pick up, no awful sloppy messes to have to deal with. Sorry for going on about that but I felt it needed to be mentioned because for a very short time when Red was a lot younger, I used to feed him wet food... so I know what I'm talking about when I say there's a difference in the poop.
So all in all I am extremely happy with this dog food, I've never looked back since putting my dogs on this food, they are both doing well on it and I have no intention whatsoever to change it.
On the pack of this Arden Grange Adult Lamb And Rice, there is a list of ingredients, typical analysis, feeding quantities and guidelines. You can always visit the Arden Grange website which is very informative and helpful when it comes to making your mind up which variety would be best for your dog or cat as they also do a wide range of food for cats as well.
This product should be stored in a cool dry place and fresh drinking water should be made available for your dogs at all times.
I buy a 2.5 kg bag of this for Red and because I use it to mix with his other food, a bag of this seems to last a very long time. I was buying it from a pet shop, but Arden Grange is quite difficult to find and the only pet shop I could get it was miles away so I've since started buying it online where I've found it to be much cheaper and with free delivery. There are quite a few websites I've found that sell it and I just tend to go with whichever has got a deal on at the time. For a 2.5 kg bag of this Adult Lamb and Rice Arden Grange I pay around £7.00. The bag lasts for ages and I know Red is getting the best I can give him.
Like I said on my other review Happy Dogs = Happy Owners.
All Arden Grange food comes in various sized bags depending on your dogs size, age etc. They also do wet foods, if that's what you prefer to feed your pet. There is something for every dog and cat, available from Arden Grange and I for one highly recommend them.
5 Stars for this Arden Grange Adult Lamb And Rice it does Red the world of good and this pleases me, I will continue to use this food and I think it's worth every penny I pay for it.
Thank you for reading my review which may also be posted on other sites.
