Advantages: Dogs love them
Disadvantages: None
Bakers Rewards are tasty dog treats that come in packs of 15 in two varieties Chicken or Mixed packs.
The mixed pack has chicken , beef and lamb flavours and they are £1.69 per pack of 15.
Packaging
They come in a handy reseal able bag which is easy to open and close and keeps them fresh, although they don't hang around long enough to go off in our house.
Depending on size and weight the recommended daily maximum is between 2 and 6 treats per day.
2 per day for dogs up to 7kg
3 per day for dogs up to 15kg
6 per day for dogs up to 30kg.
I personally would not feed at these levels, especially 2 for small dogs, my dogs fit in the middle category but we limit them to 1 or 2 per day, so one pack of 15 lasts a week in our household normally. Bit mean I know, but these are treats.
Product
We stick with the chicken variety as the beef in the mixed pack didn't agree with my dogs.
They are soft sticks that have indentations along them so if you wish you can divide them easily into smaller size treats.
They do have a fairly strong smell and be warned, if you take these out on a walk with you, don't be surprised if you suddenly attract a lot of dogs as they seem to be able to detect these from quite a distance.
You need to wash hands after use as the odour does linger.
Ingredients
They only contain 4 % chicken the rest is animal derivative, vegetables, cereals and oils.
They are high in protein and do contain some Omega 3 and 6 oils.
To be honest these are treats and I don't buy them for their nutritional value, Of course I would prefer that they had a higher chicken content and less 'animal derivative' but my dogs love these and they don't have any adverse side effects.
We have tried healthier treats but the James Wellbeloved SnackaJacks didn't cut the mustard with either dog. Sort of like offering me a choice between a bar of chocolate and rice cake, no contest.
Do dogs like them?
Well judging from the reaction of my two and that my popularity increases with other dogs somewhat if I have these in my pocket on walks, this is a resounding yes.
I have two terriers and they could not be more different, one is easily pleased and eager to please, the other let's say has a slightly more considered approach to life.
This includes :
1 Considering whether to look at or acknowledge my owner in any way when they call me?
2 thinking about whether I do what they are asking?
3. If I do decide to come back, sit or do whatever they want, I first I need to sigh, do a stretch or two, perhaps have a drink or a good scratch and only then will I obey.
However what a transformation if there is a Bakers Reward on offer, no hesitation whatsoever and will perform any manner of tricks and give looks of adoration even for a tiny piece.
I feed these to them without breaking them up, and they scurry off in different directions, trying to eat them without dropping them as these are treats they don't want to share. Then they both spend some time checking out whether the other has left anything - not a chance!
This also makes these treats great for training or distracting your dog when you know they may react badly in certain situations e.g spotting a cyclist or the postman
But fundamentally if you love your dog, you want to treat them and they get lots of pleasure from these and that makes me happy.
I would recommend these, particularly the Chicken flavour .They work out at just over 11p each at full price, and I think that is 11p well spent and so do the dogs.
