Advantages: Healthy, and kind on your dog's stomach

Disadvantages: Can be a bit messy on your fingers if they are wet (or dusty if they are dry)

Our dog used to have a pretty sensitive stomach, so we were always on the look out for treats and food that was kind on her stomach, and wasn't full of all the usual junk, additives and fillers that most commercial dog foods have in them.

We found these treats from Wainwright's and have been buying them for around 2 years now, as our dog loves them, and we like that they are healthy for her.

I've never found Wainwrights foods anywhere else other than Pets at Home (I used to think they were Pets at Home's posh brand, like Tesco Finest... but I don't think they are, just an exclusive deal!), but as we do a lot of shopping in Pets at Home it's pretty convenient for us.

The treats are freeze dried chicken and nothing else. Yup, 100% chicken. I was really unsure when I first picked the packet up, because I was sure there had to be some sort of additives or preservatives but it didn't appear to be anything other than chicken! I think I even checked with the cashier, and they said it would be fine for our dog, who was on expensive sensitive stomach food at the time so we didn't want anything that could jepordise that.

The pouches themselves are resealable, which is handy as the feeding guidelines for a dog like ours (around 22kg) is about 6 a day I think so you can seal the packet back up once you've given all the treats you want to give at that time. Anyone who'd ended up with a pocket smelling like dog treats after a bag split will know how helpful that is (maybe it's just me!). We actually give more than 6 in one go, and she's not had any problems with them.

We use the chicken treats for reward based training, particularly as a special reward for returning to us when called when she's off the lead. I always find you need an extra special treat if she has the scent of dead rabbit in her nostrils, or rabbit poo, or some other beautiful smell when she decides she'll come back but in her own time - but she's always willing to sprint straight back for these!

The only downside is that some of the chicken residue gets left on your fingers. This is just like chicken dust, which is just powder from some of the chicken that hasn't stuck together. I normally let our dog lick this off my fingers, but I guess this could bother some people. For the same reason, if it's raining and you are going to go out and use these as a reward for training etc. you'll find that you'll definitely need to dry your hands if you don't want the bits of chicken sticking to your fingers or aren't keen on your dog licking it off your fingers. It's only a small gripe though, and definitely preferable to them being coated in something to make them more 'clumpy' like a lot of biscuits and dog treats.

The packaging states that there is no Wheat Gluten, Unhealthy Additives, No Beef or Pork, Dairy products or Eggs, Soya or other fillers and it's good that they are so clear with what is contained, particularly if your dog has a sensitive stomach currently, or in the past.

Our dog has happily grown out of most of her stomach problems, but we continue to buy these, and have even moved her onto the matching main food which she is better on.

Although they are slightly more expensive than a lot of other treats, the small size of the treats make them perfect for training, and it's good to know you are giving your dog good quality food. To be fair, at two for five pounds, they aren't too expensive and containing no sugar or other rubbish, think what you'll save in dental scale and polishes, and other vet treatment.

The treats come in 40g packs I think, and there are lots of cubes of chicken in there to last you a good while (although as I said earlier, I do seem to give out more treats as they are very small cubes!).

Overall, a fantastic, healthy treat that I'm sure your dog will enjoy - ours certainly does!

Summary: Really good, healthy treats that are perfect for reward based training
