ELC Cup Cake Complete Collection
by Mrb84 We bought this cupcake complete collection when Little B was about 2. Mrs B chose it saying that it was not only good value but that the collection was fun so Little B would enjoy playing with it. Me, being me, just handed over my credit card and let her order it. Now Little B is nearly 4 and this is still played with today so I have to ... hand it to her and say it was a good purchase. When we bought this the retail price was £50 and we managed to get it on offer for £25 which is a brilliant price to pay, I think it is well worth the £50. Now, 20 months later, it is retailing at £60 so I think that confirms what a big success this set still is. But what do you get? What is it? The Early Learning Centre have a very girlie doll range called Cup Cake. This is a set which will keep your cupcake doll very happy and cared for. In the set you get a highchair, a pushchair, a little rocker chair, a change bag and even a feeding set. It all has the same pattern on it so that it's easily recognisable as this collection and it's very appealing to little girls because it's so pink and has little cupcakes all over it! The pushchair The pushchair isn't a tacky one at all. You can buy a cupcake collection stroller which is quite tacky and looks like it won't last a long time with a rough toddler but the one that comes in this set is very good quality. It has a basket underneath which is useful to carry 'shopping' although Little B tends to use it to collect stones or leaves when we go on walks which is quite cute! The seat itself has a strap so Little B can be taught the importance of safety and always ensure that her dolly is carefully strapped in so that she doesn't fall. It is a very modern pushchair as it's a three-wheeler! It's very light so it's easy for Little B to push around and steer well. She has been playing with this since she was 2 and now nearly 2 years later she still plays with it fine so it is a good height, it will last a good while, she isn't leaning over to try and push it. It has a little hood that pulls over to protect dolly from the sun or rain. It is very good quality, trust me! This pushchair has been played with so regularly and comes on walks with us all the time, it has big wheels and it has really withstood all the hundreds of walks it's been on. It does look played with and loved but it doesn't look battered at all and still works just as it did on day one. The basket underneath is a little grubby from all the stones and leaves and as far as I can see this can't be cleaned. It isn't a large pushchair, unlike this huge pram we bought for her which she barely plays with, so it's easy to store. The rocker This is a seat which is a bit like a baby's rocker. It has the cupcake material which is the seat and is on a metal frame just like a rocker would be. Again this teaches children about safety as it has straps on it too to make sure that baby is safe whilst in here. The seat does rock, not a lot, but nice and gently when you move it. Little B likes to put her teddies in here at night time and read them a bed time story. I would say out of all the elements of this set this is probably played with the least but it is still a good toy. The Highchair The highchair is pink with the cupcake material on the seat. It has a blue tray which can be lifted up so that dolly can easily be placed in it and again it has a strap to keep dolly safe. The feeding set that comes with this sits on the tray nicely; a bowl, spoon, fork and bottle. Little B loves playing with this, she sits her dolly in it and spends hours feeding her and then telling her off if she plays with her food instead of eating it properly. I think it's great to see her using her imagination and acting out a role like this! What it teaches This set teaches children an awful lot about the world as well as helps them to develop various skills. Children can learn through role-play about various events. We have sometimes used this set to explain to Little B why it's important not to take your seat belt off- we have shown how if dolly isn't strapped in she can fall out of the pushchair. She has also taken various elements of our days and acted them out but taking on our roles such as telling dolly off for not eating her dinner nicely and I think this helps her to have empathy and understanding. Little B has learnt how to fasten dolly in so it's improved her fine motor skills and she has also learnt to navigate with the pushchair and steer it well. I think it's also taught her to be gentle and kind to her little baby brother as she has been so used to tucking her little teddies up at night in the rocker and reading them a bed time story, she now loves doing this with her baby brother too! Entertainment factor This is definitely high on the entertainment factor! Little B has played endlessly with this, especially the pushchair. When her friends come to play they enjoy playing with it too, even slightly older children who are 6 and 7. I think it can last us another few years yet so definitey think it is aimed at children from 2 to about 6 or 7, maybe even a bit older depending. It is good because there are several elements to it which can be played with right away. There was no fiddling around setting this up, it only took a matter of minutes to lift it out of the box it came in, take off the wrapping and snap on a wheel on the pushchair and hey-presto it was ready to be played with! We have never had any problems with it, nothing has ever broken or become a bit dodgy. Little B will play with this in various ways whether it's tucking a teddy up in the rocker, taking dolly for a walk, using the pushchair shopping basket to collect items, feeding a dolly in the highchair or using the changing bag to go 'shopping' with. Recommendation Yes I recommend this. I think it is worth the retail price but if you can find it on offer then definitely go for it! It is geared towards girls as it is very pink, I don't think a little boy would really appreciate it. It is very durable, it can be played with for hours, it can teach children skills and understanding as well as providing them with lots of fun. It's available from The Early Learning Centre both in store and on-line. Read the complete review |

ELC Rosebud Village Doll Family
by KLockwood75 My daughter received the Rosebud Village Doll Family as one of her Christmas presents. We had already planned to get her the Rosebud House for her birthday in February and, as a pre-cursor to this, we bought her the Rosebud Village Treehouse to see how she got on with playing with this type of toy. The Treehouse does actually come with ... two dolls, unlike most of the other Rosebud Village sets, but we felt that her experience of playing with it would be enhanced by having more dolls to join in the fun. * The Doll Family * The Rosebud Village doll family consists of four adults (Mum, Dad, Grandma and Grandad), a little girl and a baby. The figures are made of a lightweight wood and dressed in fabric clothing. Their limbs are fully poseable and they have big sold feet to enable them to stand up. I love the character in the faces of these little dolls, they have very warm smiley faces, cheeks that look like they have got a bit too over-excited with the blusher brush and round eyes. My daughter has questioned, in the way that three year olds do, why they don't have noses but, to be honest, I don't think that really matters. The grandparents also have glasses painted on to their faces (stereotypically perhaps, but it adds a little bit more character). All the dolls have woollen hair. Their clothing is also really sweet. The 'Mummy' doll favours the floral dress over leggings with a little cardi look, the 'Daddy' is dressed in chinos and a blue cardi over a top, the 'Grandma' has a spotty top under a striped pinafore dress, and a floral apron tied round her waist and the 'Grandad' has a very 'Grandad' style sleeveless pullover and a flat-cap. The only one I am not as keen on is the little girl - she is quite sweet but her clothes aren't really a design that my daughter can relate to, she prefers the little girl from the treehouse who wears a pink spotted dress and it is that little girl that seems to live in the house (in fact, I'm not even sure where the one that came with the family is). The baby is just a baby, wrapped up in a blanket and is not poseable like the rest of the family. * Playability * These dolls can be played with either inside the dolls house (or other Rosebud Village sets) or as standalone toys. My daughter did play with them on their own before she got the house for her birthday, she often brought a couple of them out with her in one of her many handbags and would make them have little conversations with each other. However, they are more exciting to play with inside the house as there is so much more you can do with them. The poseable nature of the dolls means that they can be put into all kinds of different scenarios in the house, whether that is cooking the dinner, sitting down at the table for a family meal, sleeping in their beds or sitting on the toilet,. Obviously they have to shower and bath fully clothed but, to be honest, I spend enough time helping to dress and undress the Baby Born doll so I am very glad she can't actually take these dolls' clothes off. My daughter also likes the multi-generational aspect of this doll family - she was very excited to tell her Grandma that she had a 'Grandma' doll in her dolls house. Obviously children can make the dolls into whoever they want them to be, they don't need to be a traditional nuclear family - they can be whatever combination of people that the child playing with them is familiar with or wants them to be. Playing with this type of doll really helps to inspire 'small world' play and stimulates children to use their imagination. It also enhances communication skills, whether that is with two children playing together and giving each doll as personality (my two will play with the boy and girl dolls and enforce their own personalities on them) or playing alone and making the dolls chat away to each other. They are also good for helping the development of fine motor skills too, as manipulating the little limbs into position takes a fair bit of manual dexterity. Despite the educational benefits, the main benefit of this doll family is the fun that my daughter has playing with them and the way in which they enhance her experience of playing with her dolls house. * Price * The price for the dolls family is £12.00 which I feel represents good value for money as you do get five posable figures and the baby for that price. Plus, there is no point having the house and the furniture without the dolls, and these dolls are the perfect fit for the house. Like all Early Learning Centre products, you should be able to get them slightly cheaper if you have time to wait for a discount voucher. * Final Thoughts * Overall, this is a product that I would definitely recommend. I do have a couple of minor reservations (hence the four star rating) - firstly the fact that the dolls hair is made of wool means that it gets tangled up fairly easily, secondly I think the little girl doll could wear an outfit which is more reflective of modern girls' clothing and, finally, the Grandma's apron comes off much too easily. The are also a little bit tricky to manipulate into position and, although I know that the feet have to be out of proportion to make them stand up, the giant feet do make them feel a little bit clumpy. I do feel like I am being a bit picky though as this is a beautifully made family and my daughter genuinely loves it. I also love the character and personality of these dolls, however stereotyped they are, and believe that the stereotyping makes it easier for children to identify the characters. OK, so I don't actually know many Grandads that wear a flat cap (apart from on the telly and in children's books), and my Mum doesn't wear a flowery pinny, but my daughter clearly identifed them as Grandma and Grandad which is surely the whole point. It is an ideal complement to the Rosebud House and its furniture sets and I envisage many more hours of happy play in the future with these dolls. Read the complete review |

ELC Rosebud Village Doll Family
by cornishchic My mum was planning on buying my daughter the Rosebud dolls house for Christmas and after looking at the furniture sets that went with the house, I realised that none of them came with any dolls. You can't have a house full of furniture with no dolls to play with so I bought a figure pack so my daughter could play with the house ... properly. The set of dolls that I bought was this Rosebud dolls family from Early Learning Centre. It can be bought either in store or online or from Mothercare and Amazon. The set costs £12 to buy but with all Early Learning Centre products, features in sales quite often so can be found cheaper if you wait around. The packaging for the family set is the exactly the same as the packaging for the furniture sets too. The set comes in a cardboard box that is designed in a cute and girly way with a picture of the product on the front. Inside the box is a pull out cardboard base where the family members all sit inside. The set includes a nan and granddad, mum and dad, a little girl and a baby boy. Early Learning Centre's Rosebud range of toys are based around a wooden dolls house, all of the sets that form part of this range are wooden based toys and this figure pack is exactly the same. Each family member is made from mainly wood with material clothes and ropes to make them moveable. The main body of the dolls is wooden along with the heads then the top of the arms and legs have approximately a centimetre long bit of rope that then attaches to more wood. The rope is strong and it does take a bit of manipulation to get it to move initially. This means that the dolls aren't stuck in whatever position they are made in so they have more playability. The size of the dolls is good with the older ones being around 10cm tall and the others going down in size with age. Each family member represents who they are meant to be very well. Take the granddad for example, his face has been decorated with reading glasses and has grey hair which is almost hidden by a granddad cap. He wears old style clothes with cord trousers and a waistcoat. The clothes on all of the dolls cover up the rope that makes the dolls movable so it is disguised really well. Most of the clothes can't be removed, this isn't a bad thing in my books as my daughter has a tendency to undress all of her proper dolls at the moment and we often misplace items of clothing, these dolls clothes would be a nightmare to try and find so I'm glad they cannot be taken off. The size of the dolls is excellent, especially when they are used in the Rosebud house with the Rosebud furniture as they are the perfect size for everything. They sit in the living chairs easily and can lie in the bed without their feet dangling off the end. We don't exactly have a conventional family with just me and my daughter but still, my daughter loves playing with the family in a way in which a family would work if a dad was present. I think this is fantastic as she is obviously, at three years old, becoming more aware that it's just me and her. She can move the dolls arms and legs without any problems despite the rope being quite hard to move, the more my daughter plays with them, the looser they are becoming. I'd definitely recommend this Rosebud doll family if you are planning on buying the Rosebud dolls house, or any other dolls house for that matter. Each family member is well made from a strong wooden material and I love the fact that you can move the limbs around despite being made from wood. The price is cheaper than the furniture packs of the same range so I think it offers fantastic value for money. Read the complete review |
