We were wandering around our local B and M store not long before Christmas and they had the Holly doll in stock for £2, Holly was the only character available but the box that she was in showed other characters so I think there may be more available. I already had all the girls Christmas presents but as Emily was with me and being a nightmare I did the thing that I really shouldn't have done and gave up and bought her the Holly doll to keep her quiet.
Ben and Holly is one of the few programmes that Emily likes to watch but it isn't generally one of her favourite programmes so I think she only made a fuss for the doll because she recognised it not because she really wanted it.
Holly is exactly like she is in the programme and the makers have got her facial details spot on, Holly's dress is the same as on the show being pink in colour and she wears darker pink shoes, she has yellow hair and her crown sewed on top and also her wand sewed into her hand.
It states on the tag attached to Holly that she is suitable for ages 3 and up however my daughter was not much past 2 when I bought her it and I have no worries about her playing with the toy and am happy that it is safe for her as it doesn't have any small parts. The doll is rather small so it is really easy for little hands to handle and Emily liked to cuddle Holly in bed for about the first week or so and she certainly doesn't take much space in the bed.
Emily played with the Holly doll for a few weeks and I often found it in her Chad Valley Dolls house which is a mini dolls house so Holly really doesn't fit inside but Emily still had fun putting her to bed in there. Emily got rather bored of this doll rather quickly and after a couple of weeks she stopped playing with her so now she just sits on top of her wardrobe with some of her other soft toys.
The toy is cute enough and it is really soft so great for young children but it doesn't have much play appeal so I am glad we only paid £2 for it.
My little girl loves Ben and holly which is a TV program on nick JR about a princess fairy and her elf friend so when I saw this Holly doll on sale I decided to buy it for her second birthday.
I was rather surprised at the size of the doll for the price we paid I paid double the price of this for a talking peppa pig and it was tiny so as this is made by the same people I was expecting the same sort of size. Holly stands around 10 "tall and is modelled exactly on the little fairy from the TV show. All the details are perfect so it is instantly recognisable to little one. She has a soft body which means she can be used as a teddy and then her wand and crown which are both sown to the doll so you do not lose them are made from plastic making them a little harder.
She is bright in colour and really does catch little ones attention and because she is such a good size they can give her a good cuddle and really hold on to her rather than just hold her in their hand. You do require 3 AAA batteries which are not provided with the toy so to start with you need to insert these and then holly is ready to go. The doll is really well made all the details are perfect and the stitching is strong. I did think at first the wings were a little flimsy but this is just because of the material they are made out of for the crinkling noise when they flutter and they have actually lasted really well.
Well when you lift the plastic wand up to holly's crown she says a range of phrases there are around 5 in total each are phrases that are often said on the TV program which my daughter was fantastic. The voice is clear and the same as the TV program and they run on a random loop so that little one never knows what holly is going to say next.
Also when you press the wand to holly's crown her wings flutter which my daughter at first thought was amazing they do make a lot of noise as the wings are made from crinkly material but not so much so that it drowns out the voice coming from the doll at the same time.
These are the 2 interactive features of the doll and although my daughter enjoyed them at first she soon grew bored of it and the magic first shown by the doll was lost and unfortunately holly was forgotten about and has found herself at the bottom of the toy box.We did find rather than just being able to point the want anywhere around the crown the doll would only work if you placed it directly above the top of it and although there is a fair amount of give on the arm of princess holly and the wand to do this while my daughter was playing she tended to just point anywhere and it became a little frustrating for her when she needed to be so precise.
Unfortunately although my little girl does like Ben and holly this toy disappointed her and she has only played with it on a few occasions for a small amount of time. This is mainly because she becomes frustrated with having to put the wand to the crown exactly right rather than just having to point it in the general direction.
This toy is recommended from three years plus and as my little girl had it from the age of two I did wonder if maybe that was why she had problems functioning it but now even though she is three and a half she still finds it frustrating and seems to have outgrown it already.
I am glad I did not pay the full retail of £20 for this and brought it on offer from Amazon for just £6 which is a much more realistic price. I am sure some children would love it and maybe if my daughter spent more time playing with the doll she would get the hang of it but she just does not have any time at all which is a shame.
It is available from all large toy stores and always seems to be on offer for half price or less so if you child is a major Ben and holly fan and you wish to buy this do shop around as you are sure to find it cheaper.
