Advantages: Beautiful figurine with outstanding attention to detail
Disadvantages: Price has significantly increased over the years
I have been collecting Betty Boop figurines since September 2007 when I initially decided to purchase just two. However, my collection seemed to grow and grow until it reached the 136 pieces that I own today. Unfortunately, my collecting days have ground to a halt due to lack of space and the fact that I own nearly all of the figurines measuring 12 inches upwards. I regularly trawl ebay as there are a few older pieces that I would love to be able to get my hands on, but unfortunately they are very rare. A figurine that joined my collection a couple of years ago was designed by David Kracov for The Hearst Holdings Inc who are the manufacturer and owner of the Betty Boop trademark.
I can instantly recognise a Kracov piece as whilst Betty Boop is generally created from resin, these are manufactured from marble resin, which offers a slightly different appearance. The colour tone of Betty's skin is considerably much paler with the Kracov collectables and they tend to display much more detail although I have very few complaints regarding the design of the other figurines. The figurine I am discussing today is named Betty Boop Flower Power, which is a limited edition collectable and one that I find totally adorable.
The 12 inch marble resin figurine measures 12 inches in height with a weight of approximately one kilogram. Betty's appearance is that of a 60's hippy where she wears brightly coloured orange trousers that offer the appearance of fabric. I love the fact that the trousers have been created in such a way that they are tightly fitting around Betty's waist and thighs and suddenly flare from just below her knees. The attention to detail in this figurine is quite breath taking where tiny brightly coloured flowers have been created onto the marble resin and I am able to witness their shapes with my fingertips as they have been beautifully carved. Betty is a lady who normally loves wearing her high heeled shoes, but in keeping with her hippy image she wears a pair of brown coloured low heeled strappy sandals.
Located around Betty's waist is a silver circular chained belt, which gives the appearance of metal, but, as with the remainder of this figurine, it has been manufactured entirely from marble resin. Betty's flat tummy is perfectly displayed as she wears a short black coloured bra style top although her breasts give the illusion that she has undergone major enhancement as they appear absolutely huge! She wears a loose style jacket in colours to match her trousers with its lower side displaying fringes, which have been created by scoring the marble resin. I love the gesture she is making with the two fingers of her right hand, which are positioned in the "peace" position. Betty's right hand tightly clutches a beautiful red rose, which has been perfectly created to display each of the individual petals and green leaves.
Betty's black glossy curls are always depicted by eight curvy spikes running along the top of her head, but for some reason the Kracov pieces display larger spikes with an additional four spikes on the rear of her head, which are as equally adorable. There are a further eight curves running along her hairline and her huge green eyes are looking sideways and are framed by her long black eyelashes and perfectly groomed eyebrows. Betty displays a petite nose with her ruby red lips always being puckered. The designer's name together with the manufacturer details can be found on the underside of the base on which Betty is firmly attached. Cleaning this figurine can be somewhat problematic, particularly as there are so many raised areas. Consequently, I use a lint free cloth as opposed to a normal yellow household duster together with a small clean paintbrush to access any hard to reach areas.
I highly recommend this figurine and at the time of writing she can be purchased on Amazon for £62.99 inclusive of postage and packing. I paid nowhere near this sum of money when I made my purchase and I'm sure I paid around £40. Whilst this is a limited edition piece it seems to have been readily available for years.
I hope you found my review useful and thanks for reading.
