I have been an avid collector of Betty Boop figurines for the past 4 years when I began my collection in September 2007 with just two. However, over time my collection grew and grew to the 136 beautiful figurines that I own today although my collecting days have now ceased due to the fact that I have run out of space as well as owning the majority of those figurines measuring over 12 inches. The figurine I am reviewing today was given to me as a Christmas present and her name is Betty Boop Hooray.
This 12 inch hand painted resin collectable was one of twelve figurines that were launched towards the end of 2011 by The Hearst Holdings Inc who are the manufacturers and owners of the Betty Boop trademark. I have to admit that I would not have purchased this for myself as whilst the other eleven figurines display eye catching features as well as vibrant colours I feel this one is rather plain and lacks imagination in its design. I don't want to sound ungrateful towards my gift, but this is the style of figurine that I would have expected from the earlier pieces as over the years the designs and finishes have become more intricate with superb attention to detail.
Betty's right leg is firmly fixed to a black glossy circular stand by way of her high heeled red shoe, which she wears on her tiny foot. Betty is a very curvaceous lady and adores displaying her naked flesh and in this figurine we see her wearing a simple strapless body suit that has been painted onto the resin in a bright red coloured paint. Despite me having a grumble the body suit is quite exquisite and has been perfectly painted onto the figurine with no imperfections. The rear of the figurine is quite breath taking as it fully displays Betty's beautiful curves. Betty clearly has something to celebrate as her body language is that of joy and happiness where her slender arms are raised about her head.
Whilst I am normally very enthusiastic about writing reviews about my Betty Boop figurines I feel quite flat about this one, particularly as the outfit she wears is very similar to the ones in my earlier figurines. However, I must admit that the figurine is rather cute despite my grumbles as it displays all of the familiar features such as her signature red garter adorned with a heart that regularly appears on the thigh of her left leg. Betty is a lady that loves her jewellery and over the years the manufacturer has designed a number of different styles. However, this figurine shows Betty wearing her golden coloured hooped earrings and matching bangles on both of her tiny wrists.
An issue I have with some of the very early figurines is that Betty's fingers tend to give a webbed appearance as little attention to detail has been given in creating them singularly. However, this is an issue that the manufacturer has clearly identified as this figurine displays them to perfection with their perfect proportions. A number of people have mentioned to me that Betty Boop is ugly due to her large head, but it is this characteristic that makes her adorable to me. Her black glossy curls are always illustrated by eight curvy spikes that run along the top of her head with a further eight curves running along the edge of her hairline.
Betty never goes anywhere without her make up being immaculate and this is evident in all of the figurines I own including one where she appears in her bath tub. Her huge green eyes are always open wide and display her long black eye lashes and her perfectly groomed eyebrows. Betty has a tiny nose, wears a little blusher on her chubby cheeks with her ruby red lips always giving a puckered appearance. Due to the fact that I own an excessive amount of figurines I clean then on a six monthly basis by way of a lint free cloth and a small paintbrush that enables me to access any hard to read areas. Despite my grumbles this figurine has been designed to perfection although I feel it necessary to remove one star due to the lack of imagination, particularly as this was launched only last year.
If you are interested in purchasing Hooray Betty Boop I would advise that she is available at all good Betty Boop stockists and at the time of writing she can be obtained from Amazon for £50 although I consider this to be far too expensive for such a basic figurine.
I hope you found my review useful and thanks for reading.
