Advantages: Affordable, well made and will appeal to all ages
Disadvantages: Mass produced, so won't be worth a fortune in years to come
For the past four years I have been collecting Betty Boop figurines, which are manufactured by the owners of the Betty Boop trademark, namely The Hearst Holdings Inc. Whilst there are a number of other manufacturers that attempt to copy the adorable looks of this cute lady, they can't seem to get her features to look exactly the same. However, whilst browsing through the Betty Boop pages on Amazon a couple of months ago I came across this gorgeous Jewellery Holder and whilst it does not display the logo of The Hearst Holdings, I couldn't resist so a purchase was made.
Betty stands at 29 cm in height and is fairly lightweight at approximately 400g. Unfortunately, this figurine does not have legs, as hidden beneath her beautiful wedding dress is a sturdy metal bar that is secured tightly to the 6½ cm circular white base. She arrived beautifully packaged in a cardboard box with a large cut out transparent plastic window and the first thing that was evident to me was the size of her head. If you are familiar with Betty Boop you will be aware that her head is rather large and not in proportion with her body; a characteristic that makes her so unique. However, the head on this doll is of the correct size, which isn't particularly in line with the other figurines that I own; all of which are produced by the owners of the trademark.
The body of the doll is made from plastic and seems extremely well made and her beautiful wedding dress is made from several layers of silky white fabric, net and lace although the seam finishes inside the dress are a little slap dash, as they are fraying. However, this does not detract from the overall appeal of the doll unless you decide to continually look up her dress! Betty is a very curvaceous lady with a tiny waist and this doll perfectly displays her trim body. The bodice section of her dress fits tightly around her chest and is decorated with swirls of lace and tiny pearls that appear to be hand stitched as opposed to glued. Betty's right arm is outstretched to enable the owner to drape necklaces or bracelets over her opened hand although nothing could be stored on her right hand as it would simply fall straight off.
Betty wears a pretty sparkling diamante necklace and her facial features are almost identical to all of the other figurines that I own. I say "almost" as she has a button nose, which is larger than the original Betty Boop. Her make up is always perfect as her huge green eyes look sideways to show off her long black eyelashes. She wears ruby red lipstick on her puckered lips and her black eyebrows are perfectly groomed. Her black glossy curls have been perfectly illustrated with eight curvy spikes running along the top of her head and a further eight curves around her hair line. There is a piece of black plastic either side of her head, which blends in with her hair and inside the box was a silver coloured metal tiara, which securely rests in the gap within the two plastic pieces.
The front of the tiara is sparkling with dozens of tiny diamante stones and around the edges are hooks with tiny safety balls on the ends. There is plenty of room to hang any items of jewellery although I prefer to keep my jewellery in the safety of a drawer rather than keep it on display. Attached to the lower side on the reverse of the tiara is Betty's beautiful white net veil, which touches the floor and for the final bridal finishing touch she has some pretty white and pink material flowers that are edged with a fan of net fabric and long lengths of satin ribbon. There is a tiny loop on the back of the flowers that is placed over Betty's right hand so that she can securely grasp her flowers as she walks up the aisle to get wed.
I wouldn't normally purchase a Betty Boop collectable that doesn't display The Hearst Holdings Inc trademark, particularly as this is mass produced as opposed to the limited editions I own, which I see as an investment. However, I'm glad I did, as this is so gorgeous and will appeal to all ages. Whilst my resin and porcelain figurines generally range from between £40 - £120 this jewellery holder will cost in the region of £20. At the time of writing she is not listed on Amazon, but there are many other Betty Boop jewellery holders and this one is likely to appear again. I would advise that she is regularly listed as brand new on ebay, so it's well worth shopping around. Whilst my more expensive figurines are suited to adult collectors this jewellery holder would be perfect for children who wish to display their pretty jewellery. Consequently, this comes with my full recommendation together with 5 stars.
I hope you found my review useful and would thank you for reading.
