THE SET CONTAINS: a cooker, sink, fridge, washing machine, table and chairs, Peppa and George, plus Grandma Pig.
AGE RANGE: 36 months - 6 years.
PRICE: £14.99 (but it's currently £5.98 on Amazon).
MY VIEW: My 2 year old daughter loves Peppa Pig and I've often been in Toys R Us and browsed the Character Options Peppa sets (there's a garage one, moon buggy, family car - many different sets to choose from). However, despite the choice on offer, I could never quite bring myself to buy one - they just looked so uninspiring. Tiny little pieces that just appeared very flimsy. Then, last week, my mum bought the kitchen set for my daughter, so I finally got the chance to see if the Character Options sets were as ho-hum as they looked on the shelf.
As is so often the case, it took an age to actually open the packing - the kitchen comes displayed in a box, held hard and fast with a hard plastic covering. After 5 long minutes spent wrestling with the box, I resorted to scissors (I honestly hate having to bring them out when my little one's about in case some freak accident occurs!). Finally, against the background noise of my toddler's constant whining, I managed to extract all the pieces. She fell on them enthusiastically enough - but if I made a vague representation of Peppa's head out of a mouldy old potato, she'd fall on that too. George had barely passed into her sticky, grasping hands, however, before my mum grabbed it back. "That's very small," she said. And it was - teeny tiny, with very flimsy movable limbs. My daughter isn't one for putting things in her mouth but I knew where my mother was coming from - it's what had put me off the Character Options sets in the first place. I appreciate that small hands don't necessarily need large figures to play with - but the small George is simply stingy. By the time a child is 3 (the recommended age for this toy), their hands are large enough to warrant a toy of some substance. The whole set, though, is just wishy washy. I had visions of all the bits (because none of them are what you could describe as satisfyingly substantial) getting lost underneath the sofa (or in that general vacuum from which toys never return) within a few hours.
Somewhat disgruntled at the confiscation of George, my little girl went to sit Peppa on the kitchen chair. Peppa is larger than George (although still not what you'd call bulky). The chair is very small. Peppa fell off the chair. The box-like appliances were equally underwhelming and her attention was soon diverted to more interesting things - and not because she's two (normally, Peppa will keep her engaged for a decent length of time).
In my view, all the parts in this set look like cheap, made-in-China tat (and, yes, I know lots of toys are made in China - which is fine when they're decent). If I had to equate them to anything, it would be the type of thing you'd find in a Happy Meal - although some of the toys in there have been better than this. Forget the fact it's a set, and just look at any one piece and it's honestly very poor - particularly when you're paying close to £15 for it (which is why, perhaps, Amazon has lowered their price so considerably).
CONCLUSION: An incredibly disappointing toy that could be so much better.
As you can tell from a lot of my other reviews my daughter is a major Peppa pig fan. She owns most of the Peppa pig range and being one of the sets she has is this kitchen set. I brought it from Amazon at a reduced price of £7 but regular retail price is £14.99. For this price you get a whole kitchen set which includes a fridge freezer, a cooker, a sink, a washing machine, table and 3 chairs. Each accessories is made of durable plastic and have details of each product either molded in and some stickers to show details of each appliance. The sink is purple base with a white sink top. It has a dip molded in the top and a small tap detail. The cooker has two molded hob details on the top and molded buttons on the front as well as a sticker on the front oven showing a cake baking inside. The washing machine has buttons and soap dispenser details molded and a picture on the drum of teddy bear getting washed. The fridge has a opening door which does not close fully and the inside of the doors has stickers to indicate food in the fridge. Also with the set comes Peppa George and granny pig figures. Granny pig comes with a chefs hat on while Peppa and George have chocolate around there lips after eating there grans famous chocolate cake just like the TV episode. All of there arms and legs are movable and its great to have a slight variation of the figures rather than the same plain ones my daughter has received with most of the other sets. Finally the next pieces that come with the set are 3 chairs and a table to complete the kitchen set. The chairs have a circle base and then the chair molded on top of this to make sure they stay stable. There are 2 smaller chairs for Peppa and George and a slightly larger one for grandma pig.All the figures are easily able to sit on the chairs. The table itself is the same one you receive with the palace set and was my only disappointment. Unlike the chairs it has thin legs with a small bit on plastic at the bottom to steady them but it was very flimsy and within 4 days one of the legs had come away from the table. Overall it is a brilliant addition to my little girls Peppa pig world its not too expensive and most parts are durable. I certainly has received a lot of playtime and seems to be a hit with both my daughter and son. It is suitable from 3 years plus my daughter is 2 and plays with it well there are no small parts but I still watch her while she plays afte the table leg incident.
There are a good few Peppa Pig playsets and my daughter owns most of them so it was inevitable that she would see the Peppa Pig Kitchen playset and want it go with her others. Like all the Peppa Pig toys, it is made by Character Options. I picked it up from Argos for £8.99 reduced from £14.99.
The set comes in the usual Peppa Pig box which is blue and white with the Peppa Pig logo on the front and you are able to see the product through the box due to the clear perspex. The box isn't overly big. Included in the box is a kitchen suite which consists of a fridge which opens, sink, washing machine, an oven, a table, two chairs and then Peppa Pig, George and an exclusive Grandma Pig as a chef.
It takes ages to get all the pieces out of the box due to all the little tues and pieces of plastic. I do recommend going at this box with a pair of scissors otherwise you will just be sitting there trying to get it all out for ages with an impatient child asking why it is taking so long!
The set is pretty basic in all honesty. My daughter uses it in the Peppa Pig house and it looks pretty good in there and makes the house more play friendly. Each piece is brightly coloured and nice and chunky so they are easy for a child to hold on to and move about. Each piece looks exactly as it does on the series. I did think the addition of the opening door on the fridge was a nice idea and the inside of it has two stickers which shows shelves and food on them. The other items do not open.
Each piece is made of strong plastic and is of a slightly better quality than the usual Peppa Pig toys. I do think these toys in the set will be long lasting and durable. One disappointment I did have was that the kitchen table and chairs were the same ones which came with the Peppa house and with the Peppa Pig castle! It seems Character Options just love to knock these out regularly!
The figures in this set are different to usual too - both Peppa and George have little white bibs on which are covered in chocolate as are their faces and George is sitting down in a little high chair. Grandma Pig is an exclusive figure and she is dressed as a chef. She can stand up and you can move her arms and legs just like you can with Peppa. The figures are nicely made and look just like their TV counterparts.
My daughter does really love this set and it does get a good bit of use as do all her Peppa Pig toys. She has intergrated it into the Peppa House which I thought was a good idea as that doesn't really have a proper kitchen in it.
I do think it is worth the £8.99 I paid for it but I do think its original price of £14.99 is a bit steep. Definately purchase this set if you see it for £8.99 - Argos still have it for this amount but you have to reserve it online as there are two product codes for this item which are different and one is for the £8.99 price and the other is for £14.99.
