I wasn't looking to purchase this toy but as I was browsing in toys r us for some Christmas inspiration (yes I really do try and get organised), I noticed these were half price so decided to get one for my youngest daughter. They should have been £14.99 but I got this for £7.49 which I felt was a great price. Being quite the Disney fan she does love her dolls and this one didn't disappoint, it has a couple of little items with it too which my little girl normally loses but she has managed to keep this time. The bracelet is a sort of soft plastic with a pop button which does open because it is not very flexible so you will need to check this doesn't fall off, but my little girl does has very small wrists so this does not help. The hair on Ariel is lovely and shiny and when you brush it with the little comb it does not seem to 'fluff up'as some dolls hair can do. My little girl loves this doll and I have now been back to buy other similar dolls in the Disney princess range, as she wants to collect them all, I would definitely recommend this doll particularly if you like Disney dolls however I would not have bought it at the full price because as much as my daughter loves it I don't think it is worth £15, I would pay £10 maximum.
~~The Purchase~~ After popping in Toys R Us to purchase a few Christmas presents some months ago now, I unwittingly deviated from my 'strict shopping list' when passing a bargain wire basket stuffed full of Disney Princess Ariel's Dolls that were on 'special offer'. This item was not a requested item, but the doll was so sparkly and well kitted out that I could not resist the bargain price of I believe £6.99. When it should have been more in the region of £9.00, I believe. ~~The Quality~~ The first thing you notice about this special doll is the quality of the item; it is not a cheaper version of these dolls you can pick up anywhere. You can see it oozes the Disney quality we have all come to love and expect from them. The hair is a long fiery red and she was kitted out in a plastic shell top with a mermaids tail in matching green which had a luminosity to it, that is it has an opaque finish with rainbow colours over the top of the main green. Finished off in a pretty display box of various vibrant colours, this was one 'bargain' that was too good to resist. So, on an impulse I popped it into my basket. ~~Testing it Out~~ Upon opening the box the recipient was not disappointed, as was expected, the doll went straight into the bath to swim! Drenched in hot soapy water I can advise that none of the colours on the costumes have faded or torn. The doll is still pristine despite countless swims both in the bath and outside in a paddling pool and left out in the rain on the deck. Inevitably as little hands are want to do, the tail was ultimately discarded so arieal could walk and dance. So it was for this reason that I unwittingly 'trialled' the costume to the full. It was after about 2 months of bad weather that I noticed something sparkly and green on the spiky tree in the garden. It seems the tail had been hung out to dry at some point (not by me I add). Carefully unpicking it from the bare branches, I quickly took it indoors to wash in some hand wash and give it a quick rinse. Before I put it back out to dry, this time purposely on the washing line with 2 sturdy pegs. Given the strong sunlight that day, it was dry in no time and I have to say - the colours, stitching and padding in the tail were all as good as new! Unbelievable, no colour fade or anything. I have added this to give you an idea of the quality of the doll. Ariel herself has withstood extremes of heat - left to bake in a stuffy conservatory sans tail as well as several hair washes with hand soap and still she comes up like new. Her legs are still on and intact as are her arms (unlike some cheaper versions of inferior dolls where legs have snapped off easily). In addition to all the above, she also came with a seahorse pink comb, small grips for to place in her hair a purple ring and a crown. I believe this was originally marketed as the Disney Ariel Doll - which came with the accessories - which are now marketed as 'charms' (that being the said accesories) of the crown, ring, hair comb and small slides. ~~Summary~~ This doll has had quite e a few outings and also is unobtrusive enough to fit into a bag and tidy away easily. It provides hours of fun and entertainment both enjoyed with gaggles of friends alike or when a playing alone. All in all this has been a very good buy, both in terms of quality and entertainment factor. Of course, like all toys they have they 'rotation' value, ie one week there in and then there out. However, a quick put on of any associated film I have of Ariel be it on dvd or vhs tape quickly gives kudos to her again and she is again pulled out of the play box. A quality item, that holds it shape and has uses masses of imagination playtime for little ones. I would definitely stock up again for gifts even paying the full retail value of it as I believe it is worth every penny.
