Whenever possible, I try to do my weekly shopping online as I find it loads easier and I don't have the hassle of having my daughter asking for things all the way around the shop! Last year when we went to our static van, I must have had a mental block because I had forgotten to take a lot of things with me so this meant we had to pop to Tesco's while I was there. As always, Lauren was asking for things all the way round but when she picked this up and asked for it, I couldn't resist.
The set retails at around £14.99 and I think I paid just short of this which definitely shows me it was an impulse buy, I normally shop around for Sylvanians as there tends to be some good bargains to be had. The set is quite widely available from places such as Argos, John Lewis, Toys R Us etc.
For the price, you get Mr Maurice Chantilly who is easily recognisable as a cat and is dressed is removable jeans, t-shirt and stripped apron. Like most 'adult' figures, he has moveable arms and legs which I like as Lauren is able to manipulate him into different poses such as cooking, sitting, etc. As this is a BBQ set, you also set everything you need to create the perfect party, a table with parasol, two chairs with removable cushions, charcoal BBQ, plates, glasses and food. There are also utensils that you need when 'operating a BBQ'. As with all Sylvanians, I find the attention to detail is excellent, the pretend burgers actually look like burgers and the utensils are easily identifiable.
Because some of the parts are small, the set is recommended for 4 years plus, we brought this for Lauren when she was 4 and I would say this was about right as some of the parts are tiny (we normally find that these get lost though not eaten!)
During the summer, every time we played with our Syvanians, they used to have a BBQ, it was so funny to hear Lauren shouting 'there are some more burgers if you want them!' it is nice to see making the figures interact with each other in a social environment. I also like the set as it gives Lauren and daddy some bonding time, my other half does really like playing with the Sylvanians (he is more of a scalextric man) however he does sometimes take on the role of Mr Chantilly!
The Sylvanian range is extremely large, almost every animal you can imagine, swings, cars, caravans, furniture, houses, ice-cream vans, schools, the list is endless. The range of products available is extremely large, almost every animal you can imagine, swings, cars, caravans, furniture, houses, ice-cream vans, schools, the list is endless. The price of the products vary, depending on the size of what you are buying, single baby animals can be purchased from around £5, sets of 7 animals are normally £20. Accessories and houses range for £5 up to £120. I would always recommend shopping around as there are some good bargains to be had, Amazon are normally great at reducing, but be warned that some of their RRP's are sometime a bit excessive.
Overall, I cannot pick fault with the set at all, it has provided lots of fun and for a good price therefore I would recommend and give this 5 out of 5 stars.
Thanks for reading.
My daughter likes the Sylvanian Families - I say likes because she doesn't love them like some of her other toys but she likes them all the same, it is just they don't come out very often. She has a few bits and pieces and one of the sets she has is the Garden BBQ set which we purchased for her for £9.99 from eBay.
The Sylvanian Families BBQ set comes with a little figure which is called Maurice Chantilly (he is a mouse) and the BBQ set consists of 30 pieces. I have to say though that some of the pieces which make up the 30 are tiny though there are a few larger pieces. Some of the larger items are a pastel coloured parasol in lemon and pink which matching chairs and a garden table. These are really nice and look very life like in that Flair (the company which makes Sylvanian Families) has paid attention to the idea that these should have a wood effect. There is the BBQ itself which is bright green in colour. It has a lid which lifts off, a grill tray and the base of the BBQ has legs very much like a real BBQ. There is a little rack at the side for holding the BBQ utensils and the set even comes with the utensils in a very realistic silver colour. Maurice can even hold these so you child can stand him next to the BBQ and it will look as though he is really cooking.
The set also comes with glasses, plates, a jug which looks as though it is filled with orange, cutlery and some food which there is enough of to put on the grill of the BBQ and to put on the plates for that all authentic looking Sylvanian dinner.
The quality of the playset is really good, there is no faulting it quality wise. Each of the pieces is made out of hard plastic which is pretty durable. Maurice is furry like all the other Sylvanian Families animals and even comes complete with a stripey apron which is a nice little addition. My main gripe with it is that the pieces are so small and so easily lost. I do advise you get a little box or something to keep them in after your child has finished playing with them otherwise you are just going to be having a nightmare should your child realise that they have lost a piece. You do need some other Sylvanian Families bits and pieces to make play with this set a little bit more fun but as long as your child has a good imagination then they will enjoy playing with it. My daughter has Willow Hall and this set looks lovely on the patio area of it.
All in all, a really nice set.
My youngest daughter loves the Sylvanian Family toys, which is why, every birthday and Christmas, her grandparents always give her something to add to the collection. As she has just turned five, she has just received the latest addition to the family which is the gorgeous garden barbeque set.
I always think that all the toys and accessories in the Sylvanian Family range are so well made and great attention is paid to even the smallest details. This great set comes with over thirty pieces all packed up in a small box. This includes a little mouse character called Maurice Chantilly complete with his blue stripy apron. On the box there is a lovely description of Maurice saying that he is famous for his barbeque parties; his food is always delicious and plentiful and that he loves to chat and tell funny stories. My daughter loved finding this out about Maurice and when she plays with him she can often be heard to be making up funny stories for him!
Maurice arrives with everything that he could possibly need for his barbeque. There are some larger items such as a garden table with a pretty pink and lemon parasol and a couple of slatted garden chairs. These are all quite elegant and would easily grace any garden patio! The barbeque itself is the kettle type and has a small holder for holding the utensils that you would need for the cooking such as a pair of wooden tongs.
Alongside the garden furniture there are also plates, cutlery, glasses and a jug of squash and even some burgers and kebabs to cook on the barbeque. I love all the tiny things that some with the Sylvanian Families and all the great detail. There is one problem though and that is the fact that some of the items are so very tiny. It would be very easy to lose pieces especially with young children who have not yet learned how to take very good care of things. Also, as the pieces are so small, they are not at all suitable for very young children. You do also need a good container to keep all the pieces in once they are out of the original box.
It would be absolutely fine for children to just have the barbeque set and to play with that on its own as there is everything that you would need in this small pack for some great imaginative play. However if your children have other Sylvanian toys they can be added together and provide even greater enjoyment particularly as Maurice would really like some guests at his barbeque! My daughters have the Sylvanian family caravan and the barbeque set is a great complement to this.
I love listening to the girls playing with their Sylvanians and now they have the barbeque set a lot of the games they are making up involve a lot of outdoor cooking. It really does inspire them imaginatively.
As a parent though, I sometimes look at the toys, and now particularly this new barbeque set, and I can't help thinking that they are probably too good to play with. Part of me would love to see them all kept as a collection but it wouldn't be much fun if they couldn't play with them with it!
This lovely set is available on the Sylvanian Families website for £11.99.
