This is a review of the Toys R Us branded You & Me 16" Lovely Baby Deluxe Set which I bought for my nearly two year old daughter recently to help ease in the concept of her new baby sister arriving. The set is suitable for ages 2+ which is a bonus as a lot of these toys are unsuitable for under threes.
What's in it?
- A baby doll (girl) in a romper suit and hat
- A spare two piece outfit and bootees
- A carry cot (material) and pillow
- A mini changing bag and teddy bear
- Feeding accessories; plate, spoon, fork, food holder, cup and 'magic' milk bottle
The purchase decision
At first, in the shop, my daughter wasn't really interested in the baby doll although it came in a massive box, I think she was bewildered by the choice and scope of toys in Toys R Us but on a mission to get her on the right track with the new baby I decided this was the set for us. It was half the price of the branded versions and came with a lot of accessories but the main accessory I wanted was the carry cot so she could put the baby to bed and the outfits and food would enable changing and feeding in play as well.
Once we got the set home, we had the arduous task of unboxing the baby doll and accessories. Everything was tied to the back of the box and we actually had to rip the box to get the board with everything tied on to it outside. There was going to be no taking-back of this toy in to store once we had finished destroying the packaging!
My daughter likes to strip the doll for some reason but is not keen on dressing her. The actual doll is a soft body with plastic head, arms and legs. I prefer to keep a layer of clothes on her as it's easy to wash the clothes and plastic parts but the boxy of the doll would prove difficult other than sponge cleaning.
The baby gro is easy to put on with a Velcro fastening at the back. The trouser and top set is more difficult as the elastic is too tight around the bootees and so I am not sure how a two year old is expected to do this on their own. I think the spare outfit is a bit badly made to be honest although I think some of our new born suits will fit once our new baby is out of them so it's not the end of the world.
Her favourite feeding accessory is definitely the magic milk. It's one of those bottles where the contents quickly disappear when you tip it up and she loves feeding her baby with it. The other accessories are good in that the lids are glued on so it's ok in play but there are no small parts to swallow or lose.
In terms of the other bits and pieces, the plate reminds me of a TV dinner tray and is fine for pretend play and so far she has been chewing on the fork and spoon but no harm done there. The teddy bear is little and cute and she has played a bit with it. The bootees and hat spend more time on the floor than on the baby and will surely be lost soon. The accessory bag is great as it zips up and the contents can be kept secure so we shove all the parts not in play or use in there and it is a good portable accessory.
The carry cot is cheaply made from material but fits the baby perfectly, and has a pillow in matching light floral material. The handles Velcro together so she can carry the baby in the carry cot without her falling out.
I thought this set was good value at £19.99. Looking on the website, its actual retail value is £39.99 which I really don't think it is worth!
So far we've had lots of play with the new baby doll. It doesn't seem to be losing its novelty at all and is staying quite clean and so seems pretty robust. My favourite activity so far has been posting a picture on facebook on our due date announcing the new arrival to the family which a few people fell for! I don't think it's the nicest looking baby doll I have ever seen but she has eyes that open and close and nice long lashes. Her mouth is partially open so the milk bottle sits on her lips and she is a nice size overall (like a 7lb baby I'd say!). I think this would make a great present for a second birthday and feel that the accessories cover most role play requirements.
My daughter has had other dolls that she doesn't really play with but the accessories really help to make this more of a game and she does want to take it with us when we go out - which is not always ideal - but a sign that she likes it and doesn't want to be parted from her. The last thing she does before going to get her PJs on and going to bed is kiss her baby doll (who sleeps downstairs!) so I think it's been a good buy and will hopefully help her understand when Mummy's busy with the new baby.
