If you can work it out, it's a boon for the longevity and playability of the title, but the majority of players will give up. I was looking forward to 4x4 Evolution. The promise of online play, Gran Turismo style upgrades and downloadable cars/tournaments as well as great looking graphics and superb gameplay made it a title that just HAD to be considered for me. Unfortunately, the majority of these options are either a) a letdown or b) not applicable to UK users. Let's take them one by one: Online Play : In the US, I hear that this is fine. You can even compete against PS2 and PC players. In the UK, the option just is not there. 4x4 Evolution, hasn't really evolved at all from the old style of 4x4 trucking games, although it has a superb start up, the game is just one long boring road, much like 4 Wheel Thunder. The developers Terminal Reality have obviously tried to add a spark of originality and innovation into the game, but unfortunately, as with many Dreamcast racing games, this one is a right bore. Boring circuits - they couldn't even be bothered to design them with interesting layouts - some will put you to sleep! This game starts promisingly enough, footage of rolling hills and countryside followed by numerous off-road vehicles tearing through it at high speed. 'Yes!' you think, this is going to be great! The menu's look good too, there's a huge array of real-life vehicles to choose from and they can all be customised through suspensions, tyres and even paintwork. So you select your favourite truck, paint it racing green and then choose from a big selection of courses. The courses are pretty varied, taking in all kinds of terrain from desert to the Artic.
