Advantages: Better Graphics

Disadvantages: lack of special effects

While the Dreamcast has had multiple quality titles in each genre, flight simulators haven't been one of those flooded genres. Way back in its infancy, there was a game called Aerowings, which was overlooked by many but praised by those who did get into it. It was a lighthearted game, including no include flight combat so it may have excluded itself from the traditional flight-sim market.

The sequel has addressed this issue, and really does feel like a better game for it. The combat is challenging and the missions keep you on your toes. Be warned that although the controls work very well, this is not a basic arcade handling flight simulator.

To help you out, there is a comprehensive (albeit slightly annoying) training mode when you begin the game that steps you through the basic controls and tells you when you're doing things well. However, once you step into the cockpit for your first mission, you'll be wishing you paid attention in class!

The graphics are a mixed bag - if you don't look too closely, it looks great. Everything runs smoothly, and the detail in each of the craft is excellent. Effects are used sparingly, but effectively. Commentary is standard American affair and pretty good most of the time. The environments may be the weakest part of the game graphically, but while you're hunting down the next enemy, you don't notice at all. The controls are responsive and work really well.

The sound is - well, you can imagine how flight sim music sounds. Top gun all over again. For those who love it, crank it up, but otherwise put on some other music in the background and enjoy the game!

For those who really enjoy flight sims, this game is great. Personally, I've always found them too difficult to get into, but Aerowings 2 grabbed me and kept me playing. The two player mode is cool, and there's plenty to keep you going for ages. If you're more of an arcade fan, then perhaps the upcomi
ng Propeller Arena may be more your style, but Aerowings 2 is definitely worth a look for any budding pilot who wants some depth.
