Ecco The Dolphin, Defender of the Future, is one of the most visually ‘wow’ games you will see on the Dreamcast, it really is that good! Swimmingly good in fact, with some startlingly impressive lighting effects and water graphical presentation – it looks awesome. The dolphin animation is quite simply stunning – Sega based all the movements on a real Dolphin’s, using some kind of technology, and it’s just a superb result – 6 stars out of 5 for visuals.
Now for the bad aspect – the gameplay, unfortunately Ecco is one of the most difficult games you’ll play, should you even buy it – it’s so hard that I gave up on around level 5 out of 30 odd, but 5 levels was enough to realise that the game was getting boring, challenges just didn’t seem that exciting, not even the graphics could make up for it, but on visual splendour alone, the game is definitely worth a look – renting perhaps, or maybe if you’re really good at games, you’ll find this easy, I certainly didn’t and so I wouldn’t really say it’s one of the best games I’ve played. Best I’ve seen, but not best I played.
Plus points:
Amazing visuals and sound effects – very fluid, very tranquil – the game is quite fun to play just swimming about, forgetting about the tasks.
If you’re good, you’ll be rewarded?
Downsides:
Way too hard, and no difficulty setting change!
Boring!
Overall? Err well it’s a dolphin game, being a dolphin is harder than it looks! 2stars, sorry!
