Advantages: Nice selection of events

Disadvantages: Poor single player mode and poor control

International Track and Field has finally reached the Dreamcast and what a disappointment.

The Playstation version had a great option where you could change the button combinations to suit your playing style but unfortunately, Konami have left this out of the Dreamcast version. The default settings are incredibly hard to use as they consist of two regur buttons and the right trigger as the “action” button. This means that when sprinting towards the long jump pit, you lose speed as you have to reach your finger around to hit the trigger to perform the leap. It’s the same with the other events and the 110m Hurdles is absolutely laughable. Hit the trigger 10 times whilst sprinting down the track with the X+Y buttons. Not very comfortable.

That said, the range of events is good and the graphics are passable. Some of the camera angles are a bit shoddy, with the Javelin being a case in point. The camera is at such a position that whilst running, you cannot see the “foul line”, meaning that for the first 8 or 9 attempts, you’ll either foul or throw 10m due to over compensation. Also not good.

The single player game isn’t that enthralling, but with similarly matched friends, Track and Field can be an absolute blast. If you have 4 controllers, buy it. If not, save your cash.
