Advantages: Original racer with outstanding graphics
Disadvantages: not much at all
What can I say about my opinion of MSR? Yes, I've played most other racing games on most of the other platforms and yet Metropolis Street Racer is still the one that I would choose above any other. MSR is all about driving. Well, for a car game that sounds pretty obvious, but it's the way the game is designed to reward how you drive as well as how fast you can get from A to B. Most of the time you'll find yourself trying to impress the game with the style of your cornering and the fact that you don't actually scrape the walls every time you swing round a bend as well as trying to beat the clock or another car. The graphics really do make this game stand out from the crowd. Excellent light sourcing and some fantastic attention to detail mean that MSR really is one of the best looking racers around, and with lovely soft top convertables, you even have the choice of how you want the roof to look during the differing weather conditions and times of day. Ah, yes, the time of day is an important factor in this game, you'll be playing all through the night to see the fantastic landscapes and lighting effects during the evening, as the Dreamcast's internal clock changes the time of day in the game depending on where in the world you are playing. Music is used to great effect. While not having famous names, like say Grand Turismo on the Playstation, there are different radio stations playing lots of styles of music depending on your position. Drive around Japan and you'll find yourself humming along to electronic tracks and in San Francisco there are even Country and Western tunes, reminicent of Grand Theft Auto! The bad points? Well, if you've started the game in 50hz and want to change to 60 you will have to start again without using your saved game (great if you've just bought a new telly half way through the game!) and sometimes the graphics are just too detailed that you end up losing
the next turning and hitting a wall instead! So how much time will you spend on MSR? Well, it could eat into your social life for a long time to come, there are plenty of tracks and cars to unlock and each track is a joy to play again and again. There are so many options to choose from and a great two player game that means you can race against a friend on any track you've already unlocked.
