The game still looks good today - I recall being astounded by the graphics when it first came out, thanks to the sharp texture detail, grimy, gritty map design, and vibrant colours. In fact, the presentation as a whole package is very robust, from the menus, to the ominous deep voice that calls the start of each game, and the grunts as you...more

Quake 3 Arena is quite possibly the greatest multiplayer Dreamcast game so far. It is a PC port but is so much better on Dreamcast it is unbelievable! The graphics are crystal clear and the frame rate is fantastic even in multiplayer games. The single player is great fun but is easy to complete, but multiplayer gaming is far better and is comparable to that of Golden Eye's in my view. Right from the opening start up FMV you get a real sense that Quake 3 will be more than your average shoot 'em up - you will not be disappointed I can assure you. The sound is superb and there is a real sense of atmosphere when you play the game: each and every ...  Read the complete review

you’re a PC owner then it’s highly unlikely that you have never heard of the likes of Unreal, Half Life or Doom. Apart from these there is also the Quake series from ID software. Quake and Quake 2 were very good games in their own right but after years of very little progress, this wonder of a game turned up. Quake 3 Arena. It wasn’t just ‘another Quake game’. Quite the opposite in fact. This was a major step forward in first person shoot em up gaming. The focus here was on survival style gaming. Gone is the single player ‘story’ type of game and in comes single player Vs ...  Read the complete review

Crowned ReviewQuake 3 Arena (DC): Quake 3 has arrived in style. (1141 words)

In the begining was the word and the word was 'Wolfenstein 3D'. And ID software looked at the word and saw that it was good. But over time they realised that the word was flawed and so remodelled, reworked and remade into the living, pulsing flesh that was DOOM. The people were amazed and computers the length and breadth of the land payed homage to the true kings of first person shooters. All hail ID software. And in time DOOM spawned a sequel that built upon it's predecessor's foundations and DOOM 2 was again hailed by all those who played it as the finest of explosive and blood soaked shooters to grace their hard drive. Indeed special ...  Read the complete review

Amazing online game (341 words)

One of my all time favourite FPS games is without a doubt Quake 3 Arena, and whilst I played it largely on the PC, for the sake of ease of use, I did also buy it for the Dreamcast, and it was a huge console revolution for the ability to play the game online. The game's success then opened the floodgates for later consoles such as the PS2 to provide online gaming abilities. Unlike the previous games, the focus here is on multiplayer, and particularly, the online aspect. Miraculously, there are reports of some small communities still playing the game online, an astounding testament to the quality of the porting from the PC, an achievement that today is still ...  Read the complete review

Quake 3 Arena (DC): Dreamcast's on-line kick up the arse! (332 words)

I've been waiting well over a year to get my Dreamcast on-line action up and running and Quake 3: Arena is quite obviously the game that will have people from all over the world blowing eachothers heads off, fantastic! I was gonna wait for Phantasy Star On-line or Unreal Tournament, but after reading a review in a magazine I shot down to my local Electronics Boutique on a friday morning to pick up a copy. An afternoon was spent with two mates 'fragging', this was new language to me as i'd never played a Quake game before, but it soon became part of my limited vocabulary. Initially I found the game very difficult even on the ...  Read the complete review
