Advantages: Gameplay, graphics, story, environment
Disadvantages: Sometimes a bit slow
During the time of the release of the Dreamcast many popular titles were promised for the system. However most of the hits were either direct arcade ports or variations of the original arcade version.
Developed by Yuu Suzuki, Shenmue was the most anticipated and truly innovative title to reach the Dreamcast system.
Most impressive was the use of 3D environments and freedom of movement. Today gamers tend to be rather demanding expecting as much freedom of movement as possible within the game. On the other hand while the areas to explore in Shenmue were vast, the controls were rather restricted and more arcade like.
In certain action scenes, Shenmue used a QTE (Quick Time Event) system, where you had to press the corresponding button on the screen. In fight scenes, the battle mode switched to a Virtua Fighter style fighting system. While one had the ability to explore all the action and fighting remained arcade like. This was an appealing aspect of the game.
Having played both the original and the sequel I much prefer the original. The main reason for this, the sequel takes place in Hong Kong while the original takes place in Japan. The environments and the characters in Japan come across as far more interesting. While the sequel just feels depressing.
If you have never played Shenmue, what ever you do don't waste more money on the latest generation of rubbish without playing this. Buy this game and finish it to the end, while at times it is slow the game is not too long either and you will be pleasantly surprised.
Summary: highly recommended
