Advantages: Just look at it and then just play it
Disadvantages: A lot of dialouge so not for a really younge audience, IT ENDS
It was on a cold day during my mock GCSE's. I had left school to go into my town for my dinner when I saw the reason I bought my dreamcast. Yep you guessed it Shen Mue. I couldn't resist the hype surrounding it. I ran to the bank withdrew my £40 and proceeded straight back to buy it. I paid my money and stood for about a minute simply holding the game that would, as critics suggested, change the face of gaming. I got home that evening and headed straight for my little white box of fun, my dreamcast. I placed the game inside and started the machine up. First impression: This is amazing, something else, it even plays like the opening sequence plays. I went through the first stages, started feeding the cat and running aimlessly through streets simply enjoying every thing around. Until the game said would you like to save this file Y/N. Followed by please insert disc 2. I couldn’t believe it I had bought this game hoping it would last me a good two to three weeks and there I was, on the first day of purchase, loading in the second disc. This was outrageous but I let it go on the basis that it may just be that the starting sequence took up a lot of space. I carried on through the second disc and then it struck me, " this game is easy". I even worked out why, every time you were slightly stuck you asked any random punter (any person) and they would tell you exactly what you had to do next. I went to buy my ticket for china when what happened but the game came up with save file Y/N. I couldn’t believe it. The third disc went in and this disc showed me the true potential of Shen Mue. The fighting came into it's own and the story really started to become interesting. It was looking hopeful. The forklift truck job was beautiful, for the first 3 days. The race with forklifts was genius and the fighting at the harbour was superb. Then 70 fights later the reason for my
spending of £200 ended in a very disappointing manner. I was left sailing to China.............and that was it. I couldn’t believe it. The game then had the audacity to say, ".....And thus the saga begins". What that means I paid £40 for nothing but an introduction. Well I am a bit unsure about buying the next 11 episodes if they all end like this. So my summing up is: This game is incredible and although my review my have slated it a bit this game is a must buy. The reason for this being that the graphics are second to none, The game plays impeccably, The sound is beautiful although it lacks in comparison to the Final Fantasy compositions, the story is good whilst it lasts and the characters are truly Japanese. This game has showed the dreamcasts full potential and has proved the worth of my little white machine. I most probably will get the next episode as, to credit the money grabbing producers, this game is extremely gripping and I got angry with it because I didn’t last for ever.
