Advantages: A glimpse at Japan
Disadvantages: Could have been even better
Shenmue - even the title speaks volumes, you see this is perhaps one of the most "Japanese" games available on the DC, indeed many predicted that it would be a flop in the uk as a result. But these gloomy soothsayers could not have been more wrong because Shenmue simply oozes quality. This is the game that could well make the DC THE console to own in 2001. The graphics are stunning, and have set a benchmark for all similar titles to match. Everthing is beautifully detailed, and the animaton is first rate. The gameplay is unique as it spans several genres from straight RPG, to Beat em up, and you can even play arcage perfect versions of Space harrier and Hang on! There is so much to see and do in this game that you will spend many happy months playing before you have experienced everything that is on offer here. This is a game that will LAST! As wonderful as Shenmue is however, there are a couple of things I don't like.. The controls are a bit fiddly to begin with - I still run into walls occasionally! My other niggle is the "be back home by 11pm" thing.. Or what? I'll turn into a pumpkin? All in all though, despite these slight imperfections, Shenmue is a game everyone with a DC needs to own and experience for themselves. Go buy it...
