Advantages: visuals are perfect, nice AI

Disadvantages: frame slowdown

When you first glance at the games opening scene you think or you know that shenmue is one of the most, fine crafted games on the Dreamcast altogether. The clip explains the story pretty well and you soon know what you’re going into.

On graphical terms the game is brilliant with detail and cool colours at every turn, which in a way makes the game altogether. But with the 4 discs it’s an epic game with excellent detail and action everywhere you look and that makes it the best rpg/adventure around. There are so many varieties of texture and colour that sometimes you don’t want to look where you’re going but rather focus what is there in the back round.
So the graphics are mint but where is the flaw…

The textures, as i said are nice but there is a slight mistake made. Sometimes the graphics can kind of… slow down and also when getting near something it kind of slowly appears like they are in thick fog and it gets a bit annoying as we haven’t seen people just appear since some quite earlier games. For instance when you come near a shop that you can see quite clearly the character on the shop will appear right next to you and its weird.

There is a massive sense of realism lurking throughout the game, which makes it all that much better compared with other RPG’s and adventure games. The gameplay and graphics make shenmue ultimately the greatest game on the DC. Many game's allow you to focus on objects e.g. Deus ex, for example, and, with the push of a button, determine whether they are useful or not. You can pick up shop objects, open drawers and just pick up stuff lying around. But this game lets you pick it up and take a look at it and see it’s uses and then you decide whether you put it down or pocket it.

Ok so this kind of freedom to pick up anything to your desire is all well and good but, if you come across a load of stuff lying on the floor you can only pick up th
e one useful thing there and not everything you want. So I think that the realism helps the game get where it is today in the market, but in a way it needs to be worked on a bit, but we will find out soon when some info of shenmue 2 is unveiled.

Overall though the game easily wipes out opposition on other consoles at the moment and its good to have a winner for the DC.
It’s a beautiful game with excellent sound, graphics and gameplay and if you have a dreamcast you’re strongly advised to get this.
I give it 10/10
