Advantages: Best game ever made
Disadvantages: Finishing it
You start off as a young school boy called Ryo Hazuki coming home one day to see his nanny injured on the floor he's told she's ok but she's not as sure about his father you run inside the dojo to find your dad being beaten up by a mysterious man by the name of Lan-di. He threatens to kill you unless your father gives him a mirror. Your dad grudgingly gives in. Then Lan-di kills your dad and goes off, the only clue you have is that he drove a black car you build off that doing interesting exquisitely life like day to day dectective work searching for Lan-Di. For those of you who don't know what Shenmue is about here it is. It's a graphically intensive adventure RPG that has actually invented a new genre descibed by Yu Suzuki as F.R.E.E which stands for "Fully. Reactive. Eyes. Entertainment." and it seems to be true. You interact with almost everything in the game! Every drawer in your house can be opened, every picture hung up on the wall can be taken down, every vase on the shelf can be picked up and inspected. You can talk to anyone and get important information from them. You can also buy milk and fish for the kitten who was orphaned when the killers of Ryo's father run over it's mother but it just there for a cuteness factor and brings no relevance to the game itself. You couldn't help but have noticed that Shenmue has lush graphics those of which rank with the elite. The game looks amazing and that PS2 games just crumble in comparison. And thankfully Shenmue plays as good as it looks. You can also play sega classics such as Hang On and Space Harrier, at the "You Arcade" as sub games. Shenmue has a superb musical score that fits the game perfectly and the music changes with the mood of the game considering if you are in the free adventure, QTE or free battle. There is also music for the shops that you enter and the arcade. The arcade games such as Space Harrier and Hang On have t
heir music and makes them even more arcade perfect. You can also buy music tapes for your tape player. Well Shenmue looks and sounds good so how does it play? There is the usual exploration elements of any standard RPG but with more interactivity, there is QTE sequences that are unique to this game, can happen very quickly. Free battle mode that is very reminiscent of Virtua Fighter plays just as well and you can pull of some breath taking special moves. Shenmue is a very addictive adventure with has and will have you never dropping the controller or moving out of your seat not even to go to the toilet. After completing Shenmue, still ther is the Shenmue passport to muck about with. Watch the best movies from the game and the preview trailers, get a full explanation on how to play the game from 7 Shenmue characters, listen to the game music you have heard and go onto the internet and trade some of the junk you bought in the game for exclusive things available from the exclusive Dreamcast only Shenmue site. You might even want to play the game over again to see if you can get a different experience from the last.
