Advantages: Great gameplay, perfect conversion

Disadvantages: No sniping light gun!!!

At first I lived in the ridiculous hope that someone would design a two foot long peripheral to come with the game but Konami have got round that problem with a simplistic joypad control method that actually makes the game much easier to play than its often frustrating coin-op counterpart. Basically you use the D-pad (or analogue stick) in order to move the cross-hair to where you want it and then press or release a defined button to bring up the zoomed in scope view. Both views have to be cleverly manipulated as the cross hair moves far slower in zoomed in mode than it does in long-range vision. This does allow for sheer accuracy, large points scores and smugness in gaining a cracking head shot or watching a terrorist fall to his knees grabbing an area where three seconds before his family jewels had lived! Like most gun games Silent Scope runs against a clock so the art of the game really is to learn to use the control system to its best ability.

The levels are simple enough to get the hang of and you will often be able to take choices as to where to go next. You start off with your basic goal of rescuing the president (who was he again?) and his whole family. This takes you up against the normal range of terrorists, who can easily be knocked out of action with a single shot to any part of the body, to the end of level bosses which are often moving or flying around in a harrier jump jet! In these parts, accuracy is needed more as there are few weak spots to help you polish the baddie off quicker. Levels range from hotel shoot outs, to the back of a speeding jeep to night time forest fun with a night scope to see what's in front of you. You can also brush up on your aiming in the shooting gallery too.

The graphics and sound have been authentically recreated from the arcade and minus the rather large gun Silent Scope is a great conversion. It's easy enough to get in to quickly but hard enough to keep you from completing it the same day. S
ilent Scope puts a new spin on the whole gun game range and its simplistic nature makes it a worthy adversary. So if you're having a bad day at work slam in your copy of Silent Scope and take out some knee caps, you won't be disappointed!
