Advantages: Superb graphics and level design
Disadvantages: Still a few camera glitches
Sonic Adventure set the standard on the Dreamcast that all future Sonic games would have to follow as we transitioned into the next generation of gaming - the graphics were amazing, and the gameplay offered a new modern spin on a classic concept, sending Sonic hurtling into the new stage of gaming.
Sonic Adventure 2 takes what made the first game so great and enhances it somehow - not only does it take a few steps to fix the pesky camera issues that plagued the first game (although they still haven't ironed this out completely, unfortunately), but it's got superb graphics, from the shine of Sonic's shell, to the bloom lighting in the beach-style levels. Speaking of which, the maps themselves (calling them levels seems a bit more redundant now that there's the free-roaming element) have been tightened up a bit, making it more clear where you have to go, ensuring that you don't traipse around in circles for hours on end. Also, fans of the Sonic legacy are in for a treat, as Shadow the Hedgehog rears his hed as your mortal enemy, meaning you'll have to face off against him to save the day, and foil Eggman (still can't get used to saying that)'s plan.
Much like all of the Sonic games, the difficulty is very well balanced, meaning that a stage might take a few tries to beat, but nothing is infuriatingly impossible, and it all speeds along at a rather agreeable pace, notably moreso than the slower-moving original title. This returns us to the frenetic pace and energy of the original Mega Drive games, and I for one am certainly grateful for it! It's also got a wealth more features, such as the ability not only to play as all of the good guys, but even Eggman himself as well!
With cracking visuals, superbly designed levels, and a few tweaks that attempt to, albeit not always successfully, patch up the niggles from the previous game, this is one of the very best Sonic games yet in any dimension, and is also available on the GameCube if you haven't got a Dreamcast!
Summary: A magnificent platformer
