Advantages: Lush scenery, excellent game play, addictive
Disadvantages: Lengthy tedious video inserts
If you want to know where I am going to live when I retire, play Sonic Adventure! This is a fantastic game set in a lush, colourful world where I suggest we all go on holiday, for a few weeks at least. Unfortunately, “Eggman” (Dr. Robotnik) has stolen all the “Chaos emeralds” that help the world function, so Sonic must save the day. Actually, Dr Robotnik’s evil antics pale into insignificance when playing the game itself. The game play is perfect (as is to be expected with Sonic games) and fast moving. Some of the levels are quite literally breathtaking, and the scenery is magical! The game itself is a collection of smaller games all rolled into one. Firstly, there are the 3D levels, the one of which seems to be a 3D version of the very first level on the very first Sonic the Hedgehog for the Mega Drive. Then there’s a pinball area in the casino where you can top up with lots of rings and gain extra lives. Good when you get stuck on a certain level and need to increase your chances of continuing the game. There are secret areas and shortcuts, just as you would expect with a Sonic game, and tasks to complete. After completing each level, you get the option of playing the game from the view of other characters. There are also mini games to play too, and eggs to hatch into “Chao”, creatures that evolve rather like virtual pets. You’ll need a virtual memory for your controller to keep the Chao alive! Sonic Adventure kept me amused for a long, long time. There’s so much to do! It’s addictive and thoroughly enjoyable. Unfortunately, the video sequences between levels are boring, even for youngsters. They go on for too long. However old you are, get this game! It’s worth buying the Dreamcast for this game alone!
