Since the launch of the Dreamcast, Soul Calibur has widely been recognized as the preeminent fighting game on the system. Coming from PlayStation diehard developers Namco, Soul Calibur exceeds even their Tekken series in quality and playability. A host of mythical and outrageous medieval style characters in weapon-based battles, leather and blades call to those in search of melee. Featuring advanced physics and gameplay, Soul Calibur redefines the 3D genre in spades. The roster of fighters include Sophitia, a violent nubile priestess, proto-Goth dominatrix Ivy, and Squall Leonheart stunt double Kilik. Realistic choreography, detailed characters and impeccable production values combine to create one of the most respected fighting games ever.

While the US version surfaced amid rumors of costume changes, voice-dubs and other travesties against the hardcore fanbase, it was released mostly unscathed and even features subtitles. First timers will get a kick out of Soul Calibur's easy-to-chain combos and old hands will like its limitless depth.

I usually don't like fighting games. I absolutely despise Mortal Kombat, Virtua Fighter, and Tekken...but this one is different.

Soul Calibur has outstanding depth, especially for a fighting game. It's esentially a "weapons-based combat" game, where the user combines kicks, throws, headlocks, and a variety of other moves together for a surreal gaming experience.

The visuals in Soul Calibur are extraordinary. The characters are virtually covered in polygons, and their body motions are very realistically captured. Every detail, from the sparks of clashing blades to the effects of blades plunging into an enemy's shield, are all given extensive attention in this game.

The gameplay is equally impressive. Players don't simply mash buttons. Instead, Soul Calibur incorporates timing and eye-hand coordination to pull off defensive and offensive moves. Parryin
g, repelling, Soul Charges, thrusts, throws, blocks, and many other moves are all very amusing to watch.
The game even has a pretty interesting storyline, which is apparently missing in other fighting games. The character you select goes on a quest. Through this quest, the battles gradually get tougher and tougher. As you progess, you unlock various modes (exibition theater, museum mode, character profiles, etc.), new stages to battle on, new missions, characters, and even some new costume changes for the players.

With this many options available, it's not easy to get bored of this game. The two-player matches can get very intense at times. With around 20 characters and over 500 moves, it'll keep you busy. Each character is outfitted with a signature weapon(s), which he or she uses with great speed.

Even if you don't like fighting games, check this one out. It's a fast-paced thriller for people of any age and skill level.
