Advantages: Thirst quenching

Disadvantages: Very sugary

Today was a rare hot Summers day, and just before going back to work I fancied a cool fizzy drink from the petrol station. Instead of one of my usual favourites such as Cherry Coke I decided to try out a bottle of 7up lemonade which I have not tried in years.

Packaging: 7up is an unmistakable fizzy drink brand that is packaging in a plastic green 500 ml bottle with a green plastic cap. The bottle is fairly see-through and you can see the clear carbonated drink inside. The 7up logo is quite prominent and the flavour is described as natural lemon and lime. Also noticeable are the claims that 7up contains no preservatives, no colourings or caffeine.

Smell: The smell is fairly fragrant and almost citrus fruit (lemon and lime) like. The smell is fairly strong when you first open the bottle but it does not smell too artificial (it is apparently natural after all...). The ingredients state that 7up contains natural flavourings - however I'm not sure what "natural flavourings" actually means? If they are that natural why are they not described further on the label?

Taste: The taste is quite sweet and bubbly. The lemonade is thirst quenching and quite moreish. Also the taste is good when chilled and also at room temperature which I find quite unusual for a fizzy drink, as other warm fizzy drinks tend to taste fairly horrible.

Healthy?: Definitely not! 250 ml (i.e. half a bottle) contains 103 calories and 26.5g sugar which equates to 29% of an adults guideline daily amount (GDA). To put this in perspective if you consumed an entire 500ml bottle, this equates to 58% GDA sugars from just one drink!

Value for money: Not in this case, as I bought the bottle from a petrol station which charged a gigantic £1.25 for just a 500 ml bottle. So make sure you buy this type of product at the supermarket!

Overall: 7up is quite a thirst quenching and moreish lemonade but it is very sugary and not particularly healthy. If you are watching your sugar intake, this is definitely not the drink for you.

Summary: 7up is a thirst quenching and moreish lemonade but it is very sugary and not particularly healthy
