Asda Smart Price No Added Sugar Apple & Blackcurrant Squash
by Chippytarka
From time to time I may indulge in the odd glass of cordial, but when I buy it, its normally for the children and not for myself. I bought a bottle of Asda Smart Price Apple and Blackcurrant Double Squash for the kids as I just wanted something cheap and cheerful while I nipped in to my local to buy one or two ... items.
What is this drink?
Its an apple and blackcurrant cordial in the Smart Price range. Smart price is basically Asdas own label which is supposed to be no frills, cost effective, basic packaging and a decent product inside-basically CHEAP. The drink itself 750ml in size. Basic and plain packaging, but this gives you a clear indiction on what exactly you will get. This is double strength squash, which means you dont need to use the normal amount of squash you normally would, less, meaning it will last longer and save on the pennies. Its also No Added Sugar. Very low in calories, at 2 cals per 250ml, so great for someone who ise concerned in that area.
How do you make up this drink?
Shake before use ( I never had-might do in future! ).Mix one part of squash to nine parts water. If giving to toddlers, add more water. Simple.
What do I think of the taste?
As mentioned, this is for the children, and they drink it fine with no problems. Not heard any moaning so as long as they are happy so am I. I have tasted it myself, and for me there isnt enough flavour to it and despite it being double concentrated, I have to use a decent amount ( the same as a normal squash ) to get the taste I prefer. To be fair, it tastes exactly as it should, which is apple and blackcurrant, and for the price I wont complain.Just wish the taste was more vibrant and abit more concentrated. This might be explained by the very small amounts of juice actually in the product:
Apple juice from concentrate 4.5%
Blackcurrant juice from concentrate 0.5%
Making a grand total of juice being in this product being 5%.
If I use the recommended amount, it tastes more like flavoured water rather than squash having added water in it.
If this flavour is not for you, there is an orange version and also lemon. For below the 50p mark I got exactly what I paid for. Read the complete review |

Asda Strawberry and Vanilla Flavoured Spring Water
by angelboouk
~Strawberry and Vanilla Water~
The Strawberry and Vanilla drink is carbonated spring water with sweeteners (sucralose). It is part of the Asda 'Chosen By You' range and contains no added sugar, artificial flavours or colours. It is also suitable for vegetarians.
This drink is available in 250ml sized bottles and ... also 1litre sized bottles. The larger bottle is made of clear plastic with a screw top lid. Other flavours are available in this range. Per 250g, this drink has 4 calories and no saturated fats.
~Price and Availability~
This water is available from www.asda.com and instore. Expect to pay £1.25 for the 6pk of 250ml sized bottles. The 1l size is priced at 45p and is part of a '4 for £1.50' promotion.
~My Thoughts~
As I am following the Slimming World plan, I tend to drink diet or no added sugar drinks. This is a personal choice but I am aware that some avoid certain sweeteners (aspartame). I like flavoured water and always buy four bottles of the Asda water with my shopping each week. There are some lovely flavours in this range and one which I quite like is the Strawberry and Vanilla water.
This water is best served chilled. It is sparkling and very pleasant to drink though I doubt this flavour would appeal to all. The water is very fizzy at first and after a day or so of being open, the fizz is reduced quite a bit. I find this water to be refreshing and thirst quenching but not to the same extent as plain water. The fizz isn't too harsh on my tongue. It does make for a pleasant change from plain, boring water.
I do like this flavour as it is different from any other flavoured water that I have tried. It doesn't taste overly artificial despite there being sweetener but is very sweet. The vanilla is the main flavour and mixed with the strawberry, this water tastes creamy and sweet. It reminds me of cream soda but not as sickly. It is a nice and not overpowering flavour but there is more than just a 'hint' of flavour that some waters have. It would appeal to those who have a sweet tooth. My fiance finds it a little too sweet.
~Conclusion~
I enjoy a small glass of this water as it satisfies my sweet tooth and doesn't leave a nasty aftertaste like some flavoured waters do. I can't drink a lot of it due to how sweet it is and would say that it does become sickly if consumed in large quantities. I'm not a fan of plain, sparkling water but do like it when a flavour is running through it. I will buy this again as it is cheap and nice for a change.

Asda Smart Price No Added Sugar Apple & Blackcurrant Squash
by clarkjames
I love squash, but this is a very low quality product that does more harm than good.
You get what you pay for, and this product is very very cheap- like, under £1. The only issue is that it tastes so horrid that plain water tastes better than this. The taste is not like any other fruit i've ever eaten, instead it's a chemical, ... metallic, weak taste that requires you to mix a 40:60 ratio to be effective, but then tastes too strong. There's no good ratio with this product, it just never tastes good. If you have really low standards, then it will do in a pinch but it's not worth even 68p.
The packaging (as is to be expected at this price point) is basic, but inoffensive, it doesn't scream 'cheap', but it doesn't really excite either.
My opionion is that you should look out for offers on better quality squash like robinsons, or ribena Read the complete review |
