Lucozade Orange
by MsTricia
So I was in my local 99p store and there was an offer on 2 bottles of 500ml lucozades for 99p. What with rushing around for Christmas and everything, I thought getting a couple of bottles of this in the cupboard would do me the world of good!
Lucozade orange is an energy drink and this Lucozade comes under their ... "sport" range. Not that I do any sport, but sometimes working practically full time, running a household (mainly the 3 year old giving me trouble!) and generally having some kind of a social life takes a lot of work to keep up with and a little energy boost drink is always a bonus! It is a carbonated drink, which although hard to explain, has a distinct lucozade taste which I have found in all flavoured of lucozade carbonated beverages, but of course this has an aftertaste with a hint of orange flavour. It isn't such a strong orange flavour like a fanta or an orangeade or anything, but really more a subtle but authentic orange fruit flavour. It is not overly fizzy so as to produce gas bubbles or make me burp a lot but just the right subtle amount.
For mental stimulation I do find this helps me keep my mind focused, and it is lovely and refreshing and actually is rather thirst quenching. Today when I was out doing last minute Christmas shopping, I was a bit weary having been up late the night before but I found this lucozade really good at keeping my energy levels up. In terms of content however, this drink is not the best! It is rather high in calories, and a whopping 68 grams of sugar. This is rather a lot of sugar to have, so definitely wise for me to drink this in moderation!
Overall this is a nice carbonated beverage for a good pick me up and a boost of energy. It tastes nice, is refreshing and has a better orange flavour than most "orange flavoured" carbonated drinks out there. Due to the sugar content I have to knock off a star, but nevertheless I'd totally recommend this. Read the complete review |

Mountain Dew Energy
by sazwah
Let's put aside the fact that fizzy drinks and soft drinks are unhealthy when not consumed within moderation - mountain dew is amazing and I can't get enough of it. Even the guilt of drinking something unhealthy is washed away by how lush it tastes; the flavour is very fruity citrus blend which leaves you satisfied and wanting to buy ... more, well it certainly does with me that's for sure.
If you're a bit fussy about the sorts of sweet tastes you prefer and can't handle over the top sugar in takes, then this probably isn't for you. However if you're partial to similar strength drinks such as monster and relentless you'll more than likely fall in love with mountain dew.
The 500ml standard sized bottle is a luminous yellow green colour that you can't miss, it's pretty much it's trademark colour which makes it more visually appealing, which admittedly is what made me want to try it in the first place! Though mountain dew does have a high caffeine content, so probably not ideal if you're sensitive to caffeine intake.
It is also available in larger bottles (1 litre bottles, 500ml and 330ml cans) but from my experience, despite it being a part of a major brand (pepsi) they don't seem to be as common in retail stores as other brands such as coke and dr pepper and so on, but I can confirm that I have found them in stores such as co-operative, asda, tesco, morrisons and sainsburys, you can also get them on the cheap at places like home bargains. Sainsburys 'Diet' Blue Bolt Energy Drink
by writeallnight
Blue Bolt is essentially the same sort of drink as the more well known energy drinks such as Red Bull. The taste is fairly similar and the kick is similar as well. However, the only major difference would be the design on the can with Blue Bolt being a silver and blue can with a bolt on it rather than the red bulls that are displayed on ... Red Bull cans.
Blue Bolt is described as a "carbonated mixed fruit flavour stimulation drink with added taurine and caffeine" on the can or bottle. In my opinion I would say this is an accurate description. It doesn't really leave much to the imagination as it is pretty much exactly what it says. I wouldn't say it tastes overly fruity but anyone familiar with the classic Red Bull would know what I mean when I say it just tastes like a typical energy drink.
For anyone with a sensitivity to caffeine, I would recommend avoiding this drink as there is 30mg of caffeine per 100ml of drink which is fairly high, although slightly less than the 32mg of caffeine found in Red Bull. On the can it states the above and that it should not be given to people under the age of 16, pregnant or breastfeeding women or people with heart disease.
Blue Bolt can be found in cans (250ml) and in bottles (1 litre) in Sainsbury's supermarkets. The cans are generally on offer at 3 cans for £1 and the bottles are about £1 each. The cans and bottles are both mainly a grey/silver colour with blue writing on them. They have a blue lightning bolt across the front beneath a little information about the produc including where it is from and what it is. In my opinion, the packaging is quite well designed because it gives me the impression that it would give me a lot more energy after using it. It looks like it could represent electricity with the bolt and the colours. I feel that yellow could also have done this but in my opinion yellow would be difficult colour to make easily visible on the can and therefore I think their choice is probably the best one. The bottles have a thin plastic sheet wrapped around them with all of the detail about the product on it. This can easily be removed as the glue holding it in place isn't overly strong in my opinion.
In terms of whether the drink works as an energy drink, I think that it works okay. I find that it does make me feel more awake if I drink it, at least for the next hour or so. Normally the only time I will use one of these energy drinks is if I have to stay late at college or need to get more work done in the evenings and I find that as long as I drink them when I am getting tired, it makes me feel more awake. If I use it when I'm not particularly tired however I don't tend to feel much more awake. As the only time I personally use it would be as a way to wake me up when I'm getting tired and need to concentrate more I feel that this is fine but if you wish to use it as a physical aid before going out running or something like that I feel that it wouldn't be the best sort of energy drink to use.
As for the taste, I feel that it has that typical energy drink taste. It doesn't taste unique or anything like that but in my opinion this doesn't really detract from the product. I feel that it is a perfectly good energy drink that tastes as I feel that it should do and does what it should as well so therefore for me it is a good product. If you don't like typical energy drinks though, then I wouldn't bother trying this one in the hope of it being different. It simply isn't. Read the complete review |
