Advantages: Powerful. A superior brand.
Disadvantages: May destroy the casual drinker
Absinth.......a legend amongst hard drinkers. Tragically hard to get hold of in the UK at a reasonable price, many have quested overseas to Eastern Europe in search of this green gold. King Gold lives up to its name, and is definitely a superior brand of absinth. Those who do seek out this spirit would be well advised to look out for the label. True, it still tastes kind of like mouthwash, but minty freshness isn't a bad thing. King Gold doesn't have the same harsh sharpness which betrays many brands of absinth. Its pretty rare to find a spirit which freshens your breath and gets you swiftly drunk. Make no mistake about it: every true believer should have at least one good story which is blamed on absinth. Mine own tale reads like this: Im in a seedy, dark little bar in Prague, visiting some Czech friends. There's only one drink i'm interested in at the bar, the one spirit which has eluded me in my 22 years. Absinth. King gold label. If you're going to drink absinth for the first time, the word 'gold' is certainly persuasive. The first shot takes my breath away. Christ, strong stuff. The next two are thrown down in quick sucession, and soon, i'm buzzing. Now, absinth gets taken to the next level: setting it on fire. Unfortunately for me, my burning shot comes in a tall glass, too tall. When I whip towards my mouth, the burning liquid hits my nose, and i'm on fire. Of course, there's no real injury, apart from to my pride. I look like Rudolph for the next couple days. But I never blamed it on absinth, its a poor workman who blames his tools. Choose King Gold.

- 10/05/01 Made me go mad - still scared of the stuff. |

- 10/04/01 If it really tastes minty then I'm sure I'd like it - we just finished the bottle of Sebor Absynthe (the one from Tesco) we got after X-Mas and I wasn't too happy with the aniseed flavour.
Goes down a treat mixed with tropical squash and loads of ice though but minty would definitely be more to my taste! |
