Rarely do I come across something on dooyoo that suprises me, but today I discovered that I can now write opinions on vodka and other spirits, that is just an opportunity not to be missed!

Yes, the world seems to have gone Vodka Crazy. After 5 years in University living the student life, believe me I have drank some good vodka, but more often than not some down right disgusting, but alright when mixed with something vodka!!

If I had to choose a vodka that I really liked it would be Absolut and in particular I love their flavoured versions which give it that extra little kick and actually make it somewhat easier to drink neat in shooters, although I am not condoning that or anything.

***WHERE DOES ABSOLUT VODKA COME FROM?**

We all to happily throw vodka down our necks at the weekend,but where does Absolut vodka actually come from? I did a little digging as to be honest it wasn't something that I had ever thought about either.

Absolut first entered the Swedish market in 1879 created by Lars Olsson Smith, although it wasn't actually exported until 1979 when it became one of the leading premium brand vodkas on the market and has consequently been described by some as a "contemporary phenomenon".Interestingly Swedish vodka has its roots in the 15th century when Swedes first started distilling spirits called "bränvin", literally "burnt wine". Made from grain or imported wine, these spirits were originally used mostly as medicine and for making gunpowder (now that explains the hangover on a Sunday morning, really quite worrying!).After a while and through a little experimentation these spirits started to gain recreational use and by the 17th Century the distilled version that is today called vodka became a national drink.

Successful businessman at 10 and entrepreneur at 14, Lars Olsson Smith controlled one third of all the vodka in Sweden while he was still learning to shave! Fo
r almost half of the 19th century he was known as "The King of Vodka". In 1879, he introduced a new kind of vodka called "Absolut Rent Bränvin" (Absolute Pure Vodka) produced using a revolutionary new distillation method. The method was called rectification, a method we still use today.

The absolut packaging in the clear glass bottle with a Russian theme to it has actually been one of the most successful aspects of Absolut's marketing with it being recognised worldwide.With no label to hide the contents the words are inscribed on the bottle giving it a real look of luxury, emphasizing its premium status in the vodka market.

Absolut actually comes in a number of flavours today, the original Pure version, Citron, pepper and Kurant.

****WHAT'S SO SPECIAL ABOUT ABSOLUT KURANT AND WHAT CAN YOU DO WITH IT???*****

I have been drinking the Absolut Kurrant vodka for the past 5 years since I was introduced to it on holiday.Although there is always a kick to any vodka I find Kurant vodka to be a really nice drink and I always feel all summery when drinking it!

As well as being a pleasant drink straight or with lemonade, there are also many other ways you can drink it and here are just a few of the alternatives:-

~~~~Absolut Cosmopolitan~~~~~~~~~
If you have been watching Sex and the City religiously as I have you will know that Cosmopolitans are the drink of the moment. Absolut Rurant can be used to make a twist on the traditional Cosmopolitan.

1 1/4 oz Absolut kurant
Cranberry Juice
Lime Juice

Pour chilled Absolut Kurant into a cocktail glass. Add a splash of cranberry juice and a splash of lime juice.

~~~~~KURANT MARGARITA~~~~

2/5 Absolut Kurant
1/5 Cointreau
2/5 lemon juice

Shake with ice and strain. Serve in glass with salt rim.

~~~~~~~~~KURANT SUNRISE~~~~~~~~~~~~

1/5 Absolut Kurant
4/5 orange juice


Pour over ice in a tall glass and stir. Add a dash of grenadine. Garnish with a slice of orange.

~~~~~~~~~~ABSOLUT CAPE CODDER~~~~~~~~~

1 part Absolut Kurant
4 parts Cranberry Juice

Pour Absolut Kurant over ice in a glass. Top with the cranberry juice and garnish with a wedge of lime.

~~~~~~~~~~KURANT MARTINI~~~~~~~~

1 1/4 oz. Absolut Kurant
Dash of Extra Dry Vermouth

Pour Absolut Kurant and vermouth over ice. Shake or stir well. Strain and serve in a cocktail glass straight-up or over ice. Garnish with a twist.

~~~~~~~~~KURITA~~~~~~~~~

1 oz. Absolut Kurant
1/2 oz. Cointreau
Juice of a small lime

Mix Absolut Kurant, Cointreau and lime juice with ice. Strain and serve in a cocktail glass. Garnish with a slice of lime.

~~~~~~~~KURANT BON BON~~~~~~~~~

1 oz. Absolut Kurant
1/2 oz. Godiva Liquer

Combine Absolut Kurant and Godiva Liqueur in a brandy snifter.

~~~~~~~~~KURANT AFFAIR~~~~~~~~~~

1 1/4 oz. Absolut Kurant
Cranberry Juice
Club Soda

Pour Absolut Kurant over ice in a tall glass. Fill most of the way with cranberry juice. Top off with a splash of soda. Garnish with a wedge of lime

~~~~~~~~KURANT AND 7-UP~~~~~~~~~~~~

1 1/4 oz. Absolut Kurant
7-Up (lemonade)

Pour Absolut Kurant over ice in a tall glass. Fill with 7-Up. Garnish with a slice of lemon and a slice of lime.

1 1/4 oz. Absolut Kurant

Serve chilled Absolut Kurant in a cordial glass. Try dropping in a fresh raspberry

As you can see the flavour in the vodka doesn't make it any less versatile than the plain pure vodka, I would say that it lends itself to many more drinks as it has a nice flavour to add. I didn't quite manage 101 us
