Advantages: Sweet and delicious with lemonade
Disadvantages: Contains eggywegs
I always associate advocaat with Christmas as this is usually the only time that it gets drunk at our house. Warninks is one of the biggest producers of advocaat and they use an estimated 60 million egg yolks a year. The commercial drink is made from grape spirit, sugar, vanilla and usually an emulsifying agent.
Advocaat originates in Holland although the idea for the drink is believed to have originated in Dutch Brazilian settlements where planters fermented a drink made from the fruit of the Avocado tree. When the planters returned home they were no longer able to use avocados so they changed the original name of the drink to advocaat and used eggs for the main ingredient.
Advocaat is a thick yellow liquid the colour of egg yolk that pours slowly from the bottle. It is commonly diluted with lemonade. Add a drop of lime and a cherry and I think you get a Snowball. In our house we sometimes add a shot of vodka which isn't really necessary as the alcohol content is already about 17%. Whatever you add you'll end up with a pleasant mellow sweet tasting concoction. I don't have a sweet tooth but I can easily down two or three of the vodka variety without a problem... although it's best not to drink it with Guinness.
A 70cl bottle of Warninks advocaat at Tesco's costs just under £10 a bottle. This seems to be the average price. Tesco do their own brand for just under £5 but I would recommend Warninks as the best quality brand.
Summary: Yellow Christmas drink
