Advantages: cheap, good value for money
Disadvantages: no Aldi near me, not always available
NAME OF DRINK
Alcafe Cappuccino is Aldi Stores own brand of cappuccino. It comes in a box with 10 sachets and a sachet of chocolate topping. The original box we purchased (see below) had a gold 10g sachet of chocolate topping which was difficult to open and storing it was a nightmare, as it was to be used for all 10 sachets (and we can’t drink all 10 at once!!). All subsequent boxes have had a box with a sliding purple top, which sprinkles the topping more evenly and is very easy to use and store. Each sachet is 12.5g and these are sweetened instant white coffee drinks, so may be unsuitable for diabetics or other people on diets.
BACKGROUND
At work, we often have an Aldi trip to the Somercotes store as they have special offers on garden equipment, tools, etc. On one of these (frequent) trips, we had to purchase coffee for our “office tea fund”. I rarely look at the food/drink aisles on these trips as we are going specifically for the special offers. However, on this occasion we realised that Aldi only stocked their own brand of coffee and that they also sold their own cappuccino and hot chocolate range. My colleague and I decided to splash out on the cappuccino as well as the coffee we had gone for.
COLOUR
The cappuccino is a creamy beige colour with a chocolate brown topping (if applied).
TASTE
The taste is out of this world! It is the best instant cappuccino I have tasted. It tastes of coffee (naturally) but is very creamy and the chocolate topping really enhances the flavour. It has got hydrogenated fat in it so this may have something to do with it, so it should be drunk sparingly.
SMELL
The main smell I get from it is the chocolate topping, but my hay fever is playing me up at the moment, so it may smell of coffee too.
MAIN INGREDIENTS
Coffee, milk powder, hydrogenated fat and chocolate topping.
PRICE
£1.99 for ten sachets, which works out at about 20p each. Only available from Aldi shops.
GOOD POINTS
1. Low price
2. Gluten free
3. Suitable for vegetarians
4. Tastes brilliant
BAD POINTS
1. Only available from Aldi shops – my nearest is 12 miles away
2. Not always available
3. Makes a mess of the cup – but not as much as other instant drinks.
AFTERWARDS
The mug is usually very messy after the drink has been drunk, but nowhere near as messy as other instant drinks that I have reviewed. We often need to restock this drink at work, as it is a popular drink, despite the fat content.
