Advantages: Great with cereal!
Disadvantages: Sort out the packaging!
Recently, one of the things that I have been trying to cut down upon has been dairy in my diet. I have been surprised at how fattening milky drinks are (even the semi and skimmed variety have more fat than we realise!) so I have looked to Soya drinks as an alternative.
As a child I remember trying soya milk and being horrified...it tasted sour and watery...fortunately the taste of the milk has come a long way since then!
I buy my Soya milk in one litre cartons and usually purchase the standard variety, this does also however, come in a 'light' variety also which has a very similar taste to the original.
The carton is easy to store as it is a standard one litre size and the plastic blue lid is easy to get on and off...I do not feel like I have to fight to get into my milk (which is particularly useful in the mornings when I am tired and grumpy before work!) The blue lid also keeps the contents fresh and if stored correctly (which includes being kept refridgerated) this milk will last five days. The milk is enriched with calcium and vitamins too so it is a healthy alternative.
And so now to the taste... as a serial cereal eater I like my breakfast to taste just right. the Soya milk has been a very peasant surprise to me over the past few months. When it comes straight out of the fridge, it is delicious on cereal. The milk looks exactly like 'normal' milk, but the taste is in my opinion somewhat creamier. There is also a slight...and very slight nutty after taste which I enjoy. The milk is very smooth to taste and goes well with many cereals, particularly those with sugary coatings (my favourite with soya milk are crunchy nut cornflakes!).
You can use this milk as an alternative to dairy for many other meals, although a word of caution about having it with a cup of tea. You have to ensure that the milk is added to the cup first and that the water is not boiling hot....otherwise this leads to a gruesome looking separation which does not make drinking tea an appealing part of your day.
The tatse is great, the price is...ok. It is expensive compared to milk, although the long life variety of Soya milk is cheaper...though not as tasty. My one criticism is that as yet the packaging is non recyclable. I would like to see Alpro putting this milk into a plastic milk style carton which would make me feel happier as Tetra Paks are notoriously difficult to dispose of in a friendly way for the environment.
The Alpro range has now expanded into other dairy foods, yet the milk is still my favourite alternative. Why not consider asking for a Soya Latte the next time you hit a Starbucks. It is a great way to intoduce your body and tastebuds to a healthy alternative.
Although it does take time to stop the dairy craving with your cereal, I am pleased that I made the switch and feel happier and healthier as a result. Soya milk is a great way to reduce cholestoral in our bodies too, so not only am I having a lovely cereal start to the day, but it is good to know I am looking after my insides too!
Summary: Give it a start in your latte
