Advantages: Tastes gorgeous, and is really versatile

Disadvantages: None whatsoever

Disaronno is possibly the tastiest alcoholic beverage in the world, its sweet, strong, tasty and incredibly versatile.

This drink was first made in 1525, in Saronno, Italy. Its quite obvious to see where the name of the drink came from! The story goes that Bernadino Luini, who attended the Leonardo da Vinci School of art was commissioned to paint a fresco of the Madonna by the Santa Maria delle Grazie in Saronno. Apparantly, he spend ages finding the perfect model, patient, poised and beautiful. Finally he found her, an innkeeper whos name no-one knows. Anyways, they worked together for months, fell in love, and she created this tasty, almond flavoured beverage as a token of that love. The first ever bottle of Disaronno!

Although Disaronno tastes a lot like almonds its not actually made from almonds, its actually made from pure distilled alcohol, burnt sugar, herbs and fruits soaked in apricot kernel oil. I find the flavour of Disaronno is reminiscent of marzipan and Bakewell tart (both actually made with almonds!) though is remarkably fruity and sweet.

This alcholic drink is 29% abv, and will set you back about £16 for a 70cl bottle.

And to finish off this review I thought I'd include 2 very different recipes for enjoying this marvellous drink

~Disarrono Classico~
-1 shot Disarrono
-3 shots of strong black coffee
-1 shot cream to put on top
-1 teaspoon of sugar

~ Italian Breeze~
-1 shot Disaronno
-1 shot white rum
-1/2 shot Pineapple juice
-1/2 shot cranberry juice

For both cocktails, just mix it all together and drink up!

If Disarrono is usually too sweet for you, try the coffee recipe without the sugar. The bitterness of the coffee will balance most of the sweetness, and you'll still get the hint of almond :)
