"HI, MY NAMES TIGER TIGER AND I'M AN AMARETTO ADDICT".

****MY STORY****

Let me tell you how my addiction to Amaretto started....

I was 17 when I first discovered Amaretto, I went to a friends housewarming party where I proceeded to drink so much that I passed out and was extremely ill the next day. I just couldn't believe my luck when I discovered an alcoholic drink that I actually really liked the taste off and got a bit carried away, until I had to be carried away quite literally. Forget the fact that I was under the legal drinking age, after all those summer nights swigging cheap cider and 20/20 in the park with my friends I had already decided that alcohol on the whole didn't taste too great.

After that night it was 3 years before I touched it again, yet today it remains one of my favourite drinks and I always have a bottle in the cupboard, I drink it straight over ice most of the time, yet often use it in cocktails as well as it adds great flavour.

****THE AMARETTO STORY****

The story behind the original Disaronno Amaretto is really quite lovely. In 1525, Bernardino Luini, of the Leonardo da Vinci School of Art, was commissioned by the Santa Maria delle Grazie in Saronno, Italy, to paint a fresco of the Madonna. Bernardino,a passionate painter that he was set about finding the ideal women to paint, he searched high and low for the perfect model, patient, poised and, most of all, beautiful and eventually found her. After painting her for weeks and spending a considerable amount of time together they fell in love.As a gift of her love for him the girl created a sweet, almond-flavored liqueur for Bernardino. It was the first bottle of Disaronno. That is a story to touch any romantics heart, and a lovely way for such a lovely drink to be created, Amaretto a symbol of love. It is not like you can say that about every drink it is, a bottle of budweiser for instance!

The original
recipe has not changed since those days. Amaretto liqueur is made of the pure essence of 17 hand selected herbs and fruits soaked in apricot kernel oil.It has a strong almond taste to it, accompanied by a very stong scent which alone is enough to make me buy it. It's dark colour though is enough to warn you that the hangovers are likely to be bad!

Over the years though Disaronno
Amaretto has become as famous for its individual bottle.Indeed A master glass craftsman from Murano designed the world renown 'square bottle' of beveled glass that has become synonymous with the quality and tradition of Disaronno It is also a pretty heavy bottle and acts as a good bookend to any book case! I also like the stopper type lid which gives the whole bottle a more traditional feel to it.

***WAYS TO DRINK AMARETTO****

The tradition way to enjoy the delights of Amaretto is neat over ice, as you would any fine brandy. I love it this way as it is such a great end to a meal or a nice end to the day. However, there are many other ways you can enjoy it.

Now, if you can't find enough things to do with Amaretto there, let me know and I will find you some more! I shall also be extremely worried about you and demanding you attend the next AA meeting with me!

As an Amaretto addict there is my little guide to one of the best drinks around.

However, to try and be balanced Amaretto could be one of those drinks that you either love or hate (a bit like Marmite!)as I discovered the other week when I tried to introduce my friend to it. I have never seen so much disgust in anyones face before. It is a ve
ry sweet drink and if you don't like sweet things then you are better off avoiding. In addition if you don't like Almonds then I would advise you to try something else.

To discover more about Amaretto you can visit the website at www.disaronno.com in which they tell you all about the drink, its history, the creation of the famous bottle and how to drink it. A great place to find all the information you could ever need!

I too am an Amaretto addict though you seem to be more experienced one than me! My fave way to drink it though is in a tall glass with ice and some coke (no particularlar brand of coke). It tastes fabulous and remarkably like Dr Pepper!

I love Amaretto but take it slowly these days as my friend and I drank a bottle and a half between us one evening, and the headache I had the next day was like nothing I'd experienced before, a real thumper! Great op.
