Advantages: natural juice, no artificial additives, nice taste
Disadvantages: quite high sugar content, fairly pricey (unless you can find it on promotion ! )
For my daughter's 7th birthday party, I scoured the shelves at Tesco's for something the kids would like to drink but that wouldn't be so full of e-numbers and sugar that it would send them all so hyperactive that I'd be pulling my hair out by hometime !
I spotted the green glass bottles of Fruitiser and decided to give them a go. There are various flavours available, the original one being Appletiser.
I seem to remember there being a fizzy appleade drink when I was a child (back in the 70's/80's) which I'm sure had never even stood next to an apple ! This Appletiser drink is much more subtle, tasting of real apples, not the strong fake appley flavour you get in lots of non-pure fruit juice drinks. It was sweet but not sickly and seems to appeal to children as well as adults. It's fizzy but just lightly carbonated, pleasantly tingly on the tongue and not something that will make your eyes water as it fizzes up your nose !!! Chill it in the fridge and you have a nice refreshing fruity drink for the summer.
Looking at the information on the bottle, I was pleasantly surprised to see that it counts towards the 5-a-day fruit and vegetable target, which is a bonus for busy mums everywhere, especially if your kids (like mine !) tend to turn their noses up at healthy fare delivered on their plates.
The label claims it is "100% fruit juice, with no added sugar, no added preservatives and no artificial colours", which makes a nice change in the drinks market. It is marketed by the Coca Cola company so comes from a well-known and trusted company. The sugar content is still relatively high but it is all natural sugar, and much lower than many of the alternative drinks available.
The price of one 750ml bottle is around £2.15 but when I bought mine, there was a buy one get one free offer on, which made it quite reasonable. It's also available in small individual glass bottles or cans, which would be handy for taking in packed lunches.
The kids at the party loved it, and I even let them drink it out of plastic champagne glasses so they thought they were being very grown up with their posh fizz !!!
Summary: much healthier than a lot of the alternative options !
