Advantages: Non alcoholic drink
Disadvantages: natural sugar means has calories
Appletiser is a drink I have enjoyed over the years and find I choose when I'm out now as I have had to cut down on drinks with caffeine and alcohol.
I was buying some non-alcoholic drinks for Christmas and was really pleased to see that Tesco had Appletiser on BOGOF offer.
Best served chilled it can be poured into a wine glass and no one knows that you haven't got a glass of white wine.
The taste is as expected appley, not too sweet and with a pleasant sparkle, a really refreshing drink and one that is actually quite good for me because it is made with concentrated apple juice, pure water and carbon dioxide. No added sugar, preservatives or colourants, it can't be too bad. It contains 25.5g sugar in a third of the bottle - a 250ml glass which means you consume 118kcals, so you don't want to drink too many, but it does also count as 1 of your 5 a day.
Once opened drink within4 days and keep refrigerated, but Appletiser has a long shelf life so you can always have a few bottles in store. In restaurants I have had the 275 ml size bottle or 330 ml can, but normally buy the 750 ml bottle.
The bottle is made from green glass and is round at the bottom tapering to a narrow neck, not like a standard wine bottle, more classy looking and has the name Appletiser in silver writing running up the bottle, with a green apple at the base of the name and a crown over the "A".
The basic information is on a label at the bottom, saying 100% apple juice and no added sugar and no preservatives.
Foods with a high GI tend to quickly raise your body's blood sugar levels, by contrast foods with a low GI will raise them more slowly and over a longer period and as Appletiser has a low Glycemic Index, it is useful if you are following this type of diet.
Sophisticated cocktails can be made by using Appletiser, tip some ice cubes in a jug, add a third of a bottle of Pimms No 1, some apple, orange, lemon and cucumber slices and a few pieces of Strawberries, top up with Appletiser to taste. Just a bit nicer than using lemonade!
And lastly cost! I bought them on a BOGOF before Christmas so bought 2 bottles for £2.07, afraid they are back to that price each, but Tesco have 4 x 275 ml bottles for £3.07 or buy two for £5, so worth considering.
Summary: Non alcoholic natural sparkling fruit drink
