Advantages: Quenches the thirst very well
Disadvantages: Expensive and sugary
It was a very warm sunny day today, and I wasn't feeling like alcohol so instead of the standard soft drinks (coca cola, lemonade etc) I tried a 275 ml bottle of Appletiser at the pub.
What is it?: This is a carbonated drink made from apple juice. It is a non alcoholic drink that has a sweet smell of apples.
Packaging: The drink is contained in a distinctive green glass bottle that can be recycled. The bottle is sealed by a metallic cap that is simple to open. Once open, the drink bubbles to give a vibrant fizz.
Taste: If you like apples you will like this drink. The flavour is distinctly reminicent of apples, but does not taste particularly acidic, compared to other apple based beverages (e.g. cider). It quenches the thirst very well and is very palatable as it is quite sweet.
Healthy?: The claim on the bottle is that one glass of Appletiser counts as 1 of your "5 a day". The drink is made from apple concentrate so this is plausible. However, the sugar content of Appletiser is quite high (10.2 g sugars per 100 g), so drinking Appletiser may not be the best way to boost your fruit intake!
Value for Money: The bottle I purchased at the pub was 1 pound 80 p - poor value for money and more expensive than alcohol. A 750 ml bottle at Tescos costs 2 pounds 29 p, also poor value for money compared to other well known soft drinks.
Overall: Appletiser is an great thirst quencher for Summer, and is a good alternative to drinking coke or lemonade. However, don't consume lots to boost your fruit intake (5 a day) as the sugar content is high. The value for money is also poor compared to other well known soft drinks (coke or lemonade). This is a good drink to try if you fancy a change.
