This distillery was practically defunct throughout the 1980's until the interventions of Glenmorangie got it up and running again. Possibly the least well known (if that isn't a contradiction in terms!) of the Islay malts, the Ardbeg distillery is to be found past Laphroaig and Lagavulin. The site of the distillery is somewhat remote ny land, yet easily accessible by sea (it was favoured as a landing spot for smugglers) and it dates back to the 18th century. Loch Uigidale is the water source for this distillery and up until about 1977, Ardbeg still used its own maltings.
