Advantages: Refreshing and different, with no added sugar and contains vitamin C.
Disadvantages: Might stain.
When shopping at Asda last week I had to buy some more squash. Both my partner and I drink squash more than any other drink so we use rather a lot of it. Asda do a great offer of three 2 litre bottles for £2.50, so this is what we always buy. We have found that they are good value and actually taste just as good as any other.
On this particular trip I noticed a different version of the Asda squash that we were yet to try, I am not sure if it is new and it doesn't say as much on the label but I have never seen it before.
Pear and Blackberry squash sounded quite nice so I bought a bottle of it along with some orange and some apple and blackcurrant.
The squash itself is 10% juice and contains no added sugar. It comes in a square ribbed bottle with a nothing to right home about blue label. The squash is a gorgeous deep burgundy red and when the light shines through it looks even redder, similar to dark cherryade.
It has no artificial colours and is suitable for vegetarians but contains sulphur dioxide and is a source of phenylalanine.
You dilute it to taste, some like their squash stronger than others so how much you will need all depends. With this squash you may need a little more than others and it is just a case of trying it with more or less until you figure out how you like it best.
They recommend having it one part squash to four parts water. The label says the bottle contains approximately 40 servings.
250ml provides just 5 calories, which isn't much and 17% of the recommended daily intake of vitamin C, great if you aren't a fruit person or you can't get your kids to eat their five a day.
When diluted it is a lovely pink colour.
Now to the interesting bit, the taste. It is lovely! It reminds me of blackberry and apple pie when I was a child. It is very refreshing and great when you feel really thirsty.
I find it far nicer than orange squash as the after taste stays very similar to the actual taste of the squash itself. There is no nasty surprise with this drink at all. The pear flavour is subtle and makes this rather sweet, possibly a little too sweet for some people.
Some may be wondering how different it can possibly be from apple and blackcurrant, well it is totally different, sweeter and yet more subtle. It tastes posher in some strange way than common old blackcurrant!
It tastes great if you mix it with lemonade rather than water for a sparkling change. I actually think that it would be nice if you put a dash of this in a vodka and lemonade, I might have to try that at some point.
I will certainly be buying this again, regularly! It really is nice and makes a nice change from other squashes.
It is cheap, has no added sugar, a good source of vitamin C, is suitable for vegetarians, is low in calories and tastes great.
There is one draw back I can think of and I am not 100% sure of it but it looks like it would stain like blackcurrant so that may be one to bear in mind.
Asda do home deliveries and have stores nationwide, further details can be found on their website.
Summary: Great tasting drink which makes a refreshing change from blackcurrant!
