Advantages: cheap, increase awareness, alertness, energy.

Disadvantages: can give you a come-down the day after

Emerge is an energy stimulation drink and a much cheaper alternative to red bull.
There are a fair few alternatives knocking about the supermarkets, i believe this is one of the cheapest.
It is not only available in ASDA, other smaller supermarkets sell it too, such as Lidl.
At 24p you cant go far wrong when bigger brand names such as RED BULL are charging up to 4-5 times more per can!
I personally got mine at COSTCO, which reduced the price a little more.

It is a carbonated mixed fruit flavour drink containing Taurine and Caffeine (the stuff that wakes you up!)
They come in 250ml cans, and for the calorie counters, a can = 105kcal
Emerge does taste a little different than the leading brand, of course, but its definately not in a bad way, i think it tastes great.

Caution;
I am an undoubted fully fledged energy drink monster.
Having experienced the highs and lows, i can absolutely understand the controversy surrounding these type of energy drinks, and the reasoning behind them being frowned upon, or even banned from certain countries.

I wouldn't go as far as to say they are addictive, because i can go without them, i just choose to drink them because 1) They taste good. and 2) they wake me up.
I am a smoker so i understand that with an addiction, you feel like you need it as a routine part of your day.
But please be careful with how much you consume. If you 'over-dose' you can get shaky, nervous, jittery, sweaty, and it can interfere with your sleeping.
The day after i have had a particularly large amount of energy drinks, i do seem to experience a 'come down' i feel particularly sleepy or moody, lethargic. And so the process can easily begin once again!
On the positive side, they really do help me perk up, concentrate, and make me more alert and aware.

Summary: on the whole value for money
