Advantages: Tasty, Very Cheap.
Disadvantages: None, unless are driven by brand rather than value.
This is my opinion of the stimulation energy drink Emerge:
I came across this product in my local Netto and as I generally like these sort of energy drinks thought there would be nothing to lose in giving it a try. It is a carbonated drink and is branded as being mixed fruit flavour which it certainly is. It seems to be most similar to Red Bull which I assume is the leading brand nationally. Depending on where you shop this is usually at least a quarter of the price of Red Bull. It has the same familiar taste and gives a nice little boost for when you need perking up. The stimulation comes from high levels of caffeine and taurine. It is available in a 250ml can or 1ltr plastic bottle.
Caffeine is a psychoactive stimulant found most commonly in coffee, tea and kola nuts. It is legal but unregulated. For concise information see here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caffeine
Taurine is a naturally occuring acid found in some foods. It doesn't have conclusive evidence of being a stimulant but is good for musclo-skeletal health. For further concise information see here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taurine
Contents:
Carbonated water, sugar, glucose-fructose syrup, citric acid, taurine, flavourings, caffeine, sodium citrate, inositol, amonia caramel, riboflavin, sodium benzoate, niacin, pantothenic acid B6 & B12.
Caffeine is listed as being in the ratio of 30mg/100ml.
Use this link for information provided by the Red Bull official website about their drink:
http://www.redbull.com and navigate to product ingredients. The link is too long to paste into this text box.
This is noticably less forthcoming about its contents, I am assuming you must buy the product and read the can.
It is worth noting that http://www.emergestimulation.com displays a full list of ingredients which is the same as what is printed on the can. The website itself is useful with a dynamic and well laid out design containing much more than you would think.
Nutritional value:
Product information is listed as per 100ml and 250ml which is the can size. I will display both in order:
Energy 179KJ/42Kcal 447KJ/105Kcal
Protein trace/trace
Carbohydrate 10.0g/25.0g
(of which sugars) 9.8g/24.5g
Fat 0.0g/0.0g
(of which saturates) 0.0g/0.0g
Fibre 0.0g/0.0g
Sodium Trace/Trace
Salt equivalent 0.0g/0.2g
Niacin 7.2mg(40%RDA)/18mg(100%RDA)
Vitamin B6 0.8mg (40%RDA)/2.0mg(100%RDA)
Pantothenic Acid 2.0mg(33%RDA)/5mg(83%RDA)
Vitamin B12 0.2ug(20%RDA)/0.5ug(50%RDA)
RDA = Recommended daily allowance.
The can is similar in size to the Red Bull option and is made from recyclable aluminium. The can design is simple but with a sharp contrast red/silver peak. It is branded a simply a stimulation drink and as such is not suitable for children, pregnant women or people who are caffeine sensitive.
Summary:
A great tasting energy drink which is ideal by itself or as a mixer with alcohol. Vodka would be my personal choice there. It is very very good value at around 25p though I did pick some up for just 17p a can. This equates to about a litre of Emerge for the average price of a single can of Red Bull. An excellent product. It is available in Asda, Netto and Poundland from what I have seen.
Again, visit the website http://www.emergestimulation.com for more info.
