Advantages: A delicate and refreshing taste
Disadvantages: None
Whilst out shopping last week I felt a little thirsty and not being more than a 2 minute walk away from Asda I decided to pop in there and pick up a drink. Now I'm not too fond of fizzy drinks. I mean I like them but they're not my first choice, especially not when I'm rushing around. I am however quite fond of water and fruit based drinks and so when I spotted Asda's Isotonic drink in a mixed berry flavour I knew this was just what I fancied and at 35p I couldn't exactly go wrong.
The drink itself comes in a clear 500ml plastic bottle through which you can see the delicate pink liquid that is the drink. The bottle has a sports cap making it brilliant for... well sports... but also for whilst out as you only need one free hand seeing as the cap can be pulled up with your teeth. This has to better whilst shopping as conventional bottles do require two free hands, one to hold the bottle and the other to unscrew the cap, which lets be honest rarely happens when you've got bags full of god knows what. Anyway I digress; around the centre is a blue label that has a picture of some berries on it. This label also tells you that the drink is suitable for vegetarians and contains no artificial colours or flavours. There is also a list of ingredients and a nutrional value table.
The ingredients of the drink are as follows:
Water, Glucose-Fructose Syrup, Maltodextrin, Citric Acid, Sodium Citrates, Natural Flavourings, Preservatives (Dimethyl Dicarbonate, Potassium Sorbate), Sweetners (Acesulfame K, Sucralose), Stabiliser (Acacia Gum), Colour (Anthocyanins), Antioxidant (Ascorbic Acid), Vitamins (Niacin, Pantothenic Acid, B6 and B12).
Nutritional Values are as follows:
Energy - 138 calories
Protein - Trace
Carbohydrates - 32.5g
Of which sugars - 32.5g
Fat - Trace
Fibre - Trace
Sodium - 0.20g
Now some of these values may seem high but for comparison purposes I looked at the values of a bottle of Coca Cola. I found that a 500ml bottle of Cola contains 210 calories and 52g of sugars. In comparison therefore Asda's isotonic drink is far healthier.
On opening the isotonic bottle you are immediately met with a very fresh and enticing fruity smell. This smell is like the colour of the drink quite delicate and although the smell greats you immediately it is not too strong as to become overpowering. Taste wise the drink is absolutely delicious. The flavours of the berries filter through one another to give a very refreshing taste. The taste itself isn't too sweet and is quite subtle yet still provides a good kick without being tangy like some fruit drinks can be.
All in all I would highly recommend this drink to anyone that likes fruit flavoured drinks. It is refreshing and really quenches your thirst. Although people participating in some sort of sports activity often drink the drinks, they can equally be drunk by those who are not. Furthermore they are not very expensive, meaning the bottles are great for packed lunches or taking on a day out. Asda Isotonic drinks are also available in an orange flavour and a citrus flavour all three of which are brilliant for on the go.
Summary: A drink that is perfect for quenching any thirst
