Asda Measure Up Strawberry Shake Mix
Advantages: keeps me feeling full for a good few hours
Disadvantages: if you dont make it with a shaker it will be lumpy
In a bid to lose some weight .. again, I came across Asda Measure Up Drinks. A meal replacement drink for weight control.
The picture above is of the cartoned ready made version, which I have tried however I am reviewing the powdered version which you have to make yourself as this is the one I buy most often.
Measure Up comes in a 450g white plastic tub with a screw off lid. A large sticker is placed all around the tub showing us a picture of a glass of shake and informing us about the drink. The tub clearly tells us on the front it is Asda Measure up Strawberry flavour shake mix. It also tells us it's fortified with vitamins and minerals and is meal replacement for weight control. Below this it also tells us it contains 202 calories per serving and you only have to add water. Now this I liked the sound of as I know with other meal replacement shakes you have to add milk.
This large tub costs just £4, which is usually cheaper than other brands even when they are on offer too.
The back of the tub offers an ingredients list, how to store this product, the vitamins it contains and also allergy advice. The powder does contain milk and soya and may also contain traces of nuts and/or seeds.
I will list some of the vitamins within the shake powder but not all as there are so many but just to give you an idea of what this shake contains, vitamins A, D, E, C, Folic Acid, Calcium and Iron amongst many others.
I was a little worried at first that this would be some sort of thin, watery, dribbly substance when made which wouldn't taste anything like the cartoned version. The cartoned version costs just 88p and comes with a straw making it a more convenient drink to take somewhere for lunch or just buy when you're on the go. In the carton it tastes thick, creamy as well as milky with a lovely strawberry taste to it. I knew that one of these filled me up for a good few hours too so I kept my fingers crossed before trying the powdered version.
Opening the lid first you have to peel off the paper seal beneath and then you are met by a creamy coloured powder with a plastic spoon/scoop sitting on top. Smelling the powder alone you can smell a faint strawberry smell but it has a chalkiness to it, like you can actually smell the powder.
Measuring my water and forming my scoops in the plastic scoop provided I shook my drink inside a cocktail shaker. The tub does advise that a shaker is best to use or a blender - if you don't you will end up with a really lumpy drink which tastes absolutely disgusting with the odd lump of powder to swallow. If mixed thoroughly so you do have something which actually resembles a strawberry milkshake, it's pink in colour with frothy bubbles at the surface and surprisingly looks thick despite being made with water. It smells of strawberry too which was pleasing when I first made it. I was a little scared to drink it at first, I wasn't sure what to expect, but I was quite pleased with it. It tasted of a thick, strawberry milkshake, fruity but not overly so and actually had a creamyness to it as if it was made with milk too. Drinking the shake was just like drinking another milkshake however I could feel myself filling up almost straightaway. I was even more pleased with the fact that the shake actually kept me feeling full and satisfied for a good 3-4 hours. If I have one of these shakes I only have them once a day, this way I don't feel like I'm going a day without actually eating something. But as a quick dinner in work these shakes do keep me full for a good few hours to finish off my day, so I can end my day with a nutritional and tasty tea with my sons.
I'd definitely recommend trying these to anybody who likes meal replacement drinks, and wants to save a little bit of money buying them. As I only have them to have them for dinner, one tub tends to last me about a week. You don't just have to buy it in strawberry flavour either you can also buy Chocolate - which I also like and Café Latte which I havn't tried. If buying a carton version you can also buy vanilla which is also very tasty too.
Summary: a tasty and filling meal replacement drink
