Asda Smart Price Lemonade
Advantages: recycable packaging
Disadvantages: cheap and tasteless.
Over a period of time I have bought and sampled quite a lot of the smart price range of groceries. Whilst some are really good and almost identical to more expensive brands. I have to say with smart price lemonade this is not the case. It is the cheapest pop I have ever tasted.
Okay so with a price tag of 18p a bottle what did I expect, well the answer to that question is, I was certainly not expecting the taste to be in the same league as Schweppes, but I did expect some degree of flavour.
The lemonade comes in a 2 litre plastic bottle. (good for recycling). Around the centre of the bottle is the white and green smart price label. lemonade is printed across the front in the most boring of letter formats. Then underneath there is a green illustration of a glass with a straw in it. Lets be honest its hardly going to scream buy me from the shelves of the supermarket. However what it lacks in appearance it makes up for in price. On the back of the bottle is a list of the ingredients and nutritional values. They also display a small cautious message on the correct way to open the pop. which to me screams of covering their backsides from today's blame and claim culture.
When you first open the pop (with your hand over the cap, pointing away from your face.) the first thing you will notice is how fizzy the pop is. As you pour it into a glass you will have to stop a couple of times in order for the fizz to calm down before proceeding. Otherwise the lemonade will just tip over the top of the glass. As you put the lemonade to your mouth there is no smell of lemon at all. Infact it is so fizzy that the bubbles go up your nose. So even if there was a smell you wouldn't be able to savour it. Then comes the taste test. The only way I can describe the taste is with the word 'nothing'. It did not taste of lemons, it wasn't particularly sweet. That's all that I could taste was the gassiness of the product. It just tasted like really gassy water. It was so gassy that I could feel my stomach bloating as I drank it. I came to the conclusion that this drink could not be taken on its own so decided to add a small amount of squash to each serving. To be honest it worked well as a mixer but the over gas of the pop still left me feeling flat!!
What springs to mind when reviewing this drink is peter kays take on cheap pop when he was a kid. He reflects back to when your mam went shopping and came back with cheap pop, rola cola. six litres for 10p!!! Well I have to say that I think smart price lemonade goes under the rola cola category. Go for a more expensive option is my advice otherwise you will be left thirsty!!
Summary: why i will never buy smart price lemonade again.
